Lions 0 : Northampton Saints 17 |
| 14th April |
| Report by Tim Bond |
This fixture was arranged at short notice and after
recent performances the Lions boys did convert pressure into points. From
the outset, The Lions tore into the Saints with numerous players going
close to scoring. Northampton then found their rythm and on their first
excursion into the Lions half saw an unconverted try. This did not deter
the young Lions who tackled, rucked and mauled everything. The Saints
struck again from a turnover ball in their own half and scored under the
posts which was then converted.
Half Time 0 : 12
The second half saw the same, with the Lions having 90% of the pressure.
By now the tackles were flying in thick and fast from both sides.
Northampton lost their hooker and prop due to injury resulting in the game
having to go to passive scrums!! A kick and chase out of defence
resulted in a Northampton penalty. After a quick tap, a try was scored.
Again the conversion failed. The last five minutes was all Lions
with replacement prop Lee Bates being driven over the line. He grounded
the ball, but by the time the unsighted referee had walked round, the
streetwise Saints had pushed the ball back onto the line, resulting in the
try being disallowed!! Although a loss, this is the calibre of team
we need to be playing on a regular basis.
Hopefully this is a good build up for the
Warwickshire Colts Cup for which we need as much support as possible.
Whilst the Colts and their officials appreciate all of the support, what
CANNOT be accepted is the verbal abuse given to any match officials by
parents and spectators.

Boys Brigade Old Boys Colts/2nds 12: Rugby Lions Colts 15 |
| 31st March - Report by Tim
Bond |
Lions traveled to Northampton on a rearranged fixture to meet an entirely
different BBOB side that they had met earlier in the season.
The game started with BBOB taking an early lead
running in a good try which had traveled the full width of their backs.
Lions colts looked shell shocked against a larger and more physical side.
Lions replied when David Jackson making his comeback after 7 seasons away
ran in a cracking try from half way. The game became stalemate with the
forwards slogging it out in mid field. With an unusual lapse in the
usually solid Lions defence, the BBOB were let in for a second try under
the posts which was converted.
Half Time score 12:5
With changes at half time in certain positions Lions pack took control of
all set play. A rolling maul from the half way line ( a repeat of
the first teams try from last week) saw No.8 Justin Maddock go over the
line and ground the ball, only to be disallowed due to some of the maul
being in touch. Lions forwards continued to dominate providing good ball
for the backs. Good line out ball and aggressive scrummaging released the
ball to Alex Williams who crashed over in the corner. With five minutes to
go, more good work from forwards and backs combined, saw under 17 winger
Matty Dimmock released to score his first try for the colts, sealing the
game. Although BBOB tried to come back into the game, grit determination
and team
spirit kept them out.

| Match report by Tim
Bond |
With Barkers Butts boasting that they have the best Colts side in
Warwickshire, Lions travelled with a weakened side due to unavailability.
Playing on a "paddy" field pitch, Lions kicked down the slope in
the first half. A penalty by Danny Pope within the first five minutes gave
the Lions the lead. Two minutes later, Barkers were level with their own
penalty. Lions had a try disallowed when Paul Lamont crashed over in the
corner and was judged to have touched the corner flag.
The second half was played entirely in the
Lions 22. The Lions defence was again superb and team spirit and
discipline shone through!
With no first team game, Mal Malik watched the
match and congratulated the lads in the changing rooms after the match and
informed them that that is the type of spirit he likes to see in his
teams.
WELL DONE LADS

Colts 27: Preston Grasshoppers :7 |
| Match report by Tim
Bond
Rugby Lions Colts are now starting to put all the hard work on the
training field into practice with an emphatic win over Preston.
The power of Rugby's forwards caused Preston
endless problems. Fullback Ryan Turner had a try disallowed due to a
foot in touch and then unbelievably a second try disallowed to a dubious
forward pass. After another solid scrum the ball was passed out for Luke
Brown to score. Within minutes, Ryan Turner went over and the try was
allowed! Rugbys forwards by now had the upper hand with blind side Paul
Lamont crashing over.
Score 20:0 half time.
Soon after only two minutes of the second half
Preston scored and converted a try. For the next twenty minutes, the
game was played in Rugby's twenty two. The young
Lions showed their character by tackling everything. With Todd now
sin binned, Pope moved to scrum half and in open play a long kick
clearance by hooker Adam Bond relieved the pressure. With time running
out, a miss kick by Preston was collected by Ryan Turner who sprinted in
from ten metres whilst Preston argued amongst themselves. Danny Pope
kicked two conversions and a penalty.

for England |
| 17th March |
| Lions Colt Ryan Turner has
been included in The England U18 Schools squad for the game against
England U18 Clubs.
Having played along side the other
Turner for Rugby Nighthawk's against the Navy, he can't be far off a full
1st team outing. Watch this space as they say. |

Lions continue to provide quality youth players. |

|
After reaching the inter district final
(due to be played at the end of March), Rugby and District under 17's have
had no fewer than 13 players (from the Lions under 16's and under 17's)
selected to represent Warwickshire under 17's in a series of 6 games over
the coming month! 40 players in total were selected with a view to
cutting the squad to 26 for next seasons under 18 county championship.
The majority of these players started as under 8's in the Lions mini
section! which goes to show what a brilliant start they are getting in our
mini and junior section.

Halesonians 9 Rugby Lions Colts 21 |
| 17th February |
| Report by Tim Bond |
|
With their away game against Moseley called off by the home
side, Lions traveled to the black country to play Old Halesonians.
Lions secured kick off ball
and drove up field only to knock on, allowing "Owens" to clear
their line. Within five minutes, Lions took the lead with the ball passing
between at least twelve pairs of hands. Hooker Adam Bond raced under the
posts from 20 metres. Dan Pope converting. The game then
deteriorated, and the young lions were dragged down to gutter level by
"Owens" tactics, cheap shots.
"Owens"
kicked three penalties to lead 9 -7 at half time. Second half saw
the same tactics with the Lions the only side to try and play rugby.
With the ball traveling from one side of the pitch to another, centre Alex
Williams dived over in the corner, only to be kicked and punched by two
tacklers, and had to leave the field injured. Danny Pope converted
from the touch line ("Golden Boots" is back!) After their early
season disciplinary troubles the young lions kept their heads and Luke
Brown chipped and chased and set up a ruck ball for Kiwi Lock Hayden (the
big man!) to crash over for his first club try. Pope again converting from
out wide.
An overheard conversation
Winger Luke Brown and Prop Lee Bates. Luke--"How come everybody was
called Owen?" Batesy replied--"Because that's where they
all come from--Halesowen" Who said props don't have brains!!
Keep going boys! Home fixture next week against Nottingham -always
been an excellent fixture and close game!

COLTS 12 RUGBY LIONS COLTS 29 |
| Report by Tim Bond |
The Lions welcomed three of their
five southern hemisphere players for their debuts.
No 8 Justin Maddock , Blindside
Paul Lamont both from South Africa and "Johno" on the wing from
Australia.
With rampant forwards play, the Lions dominated. "Johno"
left the field after fifteen minutes with a gash to the head needing
stitches
Tries scored by : Antony Ford, Ross
Bailey, Ryan Turner, Adam Bond & Luke Brown. Conversions : Danny
Pope (2)
The Colts are now looking for a good run
leading up to the Warwickshire Colts Cup.
Quote of the day!! from Justin
Maddock "I've not played for six months but will be fine
once I've put a big hit in!!!"
HE CERTAINLY WAS!! KEEP THE
SPIRIT UP AND KEEP BURDO SMILING!!!

| 13th January - NATIONAL
COLTS CUP (plate) |
| SCUNTHORPE: 18 RUGBY LIONS:
17 |
| Report by Tim Bond |
The Colts traveled to Scunthorpe with (on paper) a depleted team.
Only 15
players made themselves available which included two under 16's Glenn Bond
(fullback) and Danny Facer (backrow) Lions had all the play with
Scunthorpe
only in the Lions half six times all game! scoring on three of them!
Lions forwards were in tremendous form and the backs were firing on all
cylinders but Scunthorpe prevented them scoring with some brilliant
defence.
The Lions points came from:
Luke Brown 2 tries, Anthony Ford 1 try, Danny
Pope 1 conversion
Team spirit was at an all time high and this showed.
Well done for the commitment from those players who played especially
Danny
Facer and Glenn Bond who were playing three years above their age but
coped
admirably (it definitely didn't show). Well done all the lads, you're a
credit to yourselves and the Club.
