The Lions, well a
combination of Lions, Colts, Tigers & Wasps took on the varsity winners.
Cambridge took an early
lead with a converted try by Owen Edwards. (7 – 0) This was cancelled out
by a fine try from Alex Taylor who’s jinking run left the students
grasping thin air.( 7 – 7)
In a game which was
continually interrupted by the whistle, (a world record for feeding the
scrum!!) Ricky Nebitt was the first to see yellow, unsure of the offence
but we think this ensured the refs family entrance to Cambridge. On half
time Cambs pressure told, they were awarded a penalty in front of the
posts. (10 – 7)
Cambridge had the
better of the half, as the Lions/Tigers struggled to establish a platform
to work from.
Half Time
Cambridge 10 –
7 Lions.
No sooner had the
second half started that subject of ‘University top up fees’ came up, No
problem - penalty Cambridge (13 – 7). The Lions were now playing with the
wind, but it was Cambridge who were controlling the game.
Attacking in the Lions
22 saw another try (18 – 7). A penalty (Student digs sorted) was added (21
– 7). Lions now needed points and fast. A line out take by the impressive
Peter Short was then driven over the line for Glen Carson to score ( 21 –
12). From the restart Cambridge gained another penalty ( 2.1 degree), but
moving the ball wide it was intercepted on the Lions 22 by full back Luke
Gilbert. He outstripped the cover to touch down under the posts (21 –
19). A Canadian in the crowd whooped with delight "that's a seagull and a
half" ummm...
The Lions were now
firmly on top, especially in the scrum. Farce ensued when the Cambridge
tight head was binned. A replacement prop was already on, so uncontested
scrums…..very strange.
The last move on the
game deep in injury time Lions fly half Craig McMullan was yellow carded
(1st class honours) for what looked to be attempting to run
with the ball.
Final score
Cambridge 21 –
19 Lions
| It’s worth noting that
4 Lions colts made their 1xv debuts. Gareth Collins started, while Andy
Morris, Karl Lawson & Joel Stannard all came on towards the end. Peter Short was
impressive, while rugby league super star Gareth Raynor with little ball
to work with showed glimpses of why he is a likened to Jason Robinson.
Alex Taylor was strong in defence and attack.
…and so to Manchester.
