As
a supporter and player!!
Having raced out of the office on Friday evening to get over to Nuneaton
to support the team my expectations were high in that the Lions would put
in a creditable performance. Particularly given the performance against
Exeter where upon I and many others were expecting dare I say it a win in
this local derby.
If foresight was a virtue I would have still gone over to give my team
moral support as I believe that this is the 16th man giving the team an
edge
am proud to stand up and say that I am a part of.
To witness this performance really did make my heart sink and I am not
going to begin to apportion blame!!! BUT there does need to be some
serious soul searching by many who would call themselves a Rugby Lion!!
As a player I hate losing games but to be beaten by a better side after
putting in the commitment I can take comfort from.
This is not meant to be a side swipe against the players or the admin
behind the team, but we will be in danger of a freefall drop if self
belief does not work its way into the team. The teams in this league are
no better than us and as such we should be picking up results that will
build the confidence. What makes them stand out from us? Nothing!! Its our
ability to make them look better by playing to their level or just below
it.
As Geoff used to say "Fortune favours the brave" on the performances to
date (barring Exeter) we have been found seriously lacking.
Please note in all of the above I have been talking about us all the way
through as we are one team players and supporters alike and we are in this
together so come on you Rugby Lions get this self belief and stop playing
one below the opposition. Treat them with the contempt they deserve and
give this town something to support and be proud of.
As a Board member I would simply ask you the players to think back on the
players meeting we had on Tuesday and take a good long hard look at this
performance and step up to the plate now we cannot accept this as a
performance. Shoulders need to be broadened and no blame apportioned. You
need to look deep into yourselves for this one. This is the shop window
for your skills and in playing the game of your lives week in week out is
essential to survival of the club and your ascension as a player to the
upper tiers of the game.
I have said my piece and if anyone supporter or player wishes to talk to
me about any of the above let me know and I will gladly come over any
night of the week to discuss.
