RUGBY FOOTBALL UNION
Press Release
MALIK SUSPENDED
Rugby Lions secretary and former chief executive Mal Malik was suspended
from being involved in the administration of a club for 18 months when he
appeared before an RFU disciplinary panel in Coventry on December 15.
Malik admitted a charge of conduct prejudicial to the interests of the RFU
and the game by failing to ensure that the rules of a Sportsmatch scheme
at Rugby were carried out in accordance with the conditions and
regulations.
Sportsmatch is a government-funded initiative which provides funding for
coaching schemes with pound-for-pound backing with local sponsors.
Malik was found not guilty of a second charge of allowing money allocated
to a Sportsmatch scheme to be used for purposes other than those set out
in the regulations.
Malik's suspension from club administration takes immediate effect.
At the same hearing Ian Bletcher, the RFU Rugby Development Officer for
Warwickshire, was cleared of one charge of conduct prejudicial to the RFU
and game by failing, in his role as co-ordinator of Rugby Lions
Sportsmatch bid, to ensure that the project complied with the regulations.
Dr Matthew Lohn, chairman of the disciplinary panel, said: "We cleared Ian
Bletcher of the charge and placed on record our thanks for his endeavours
to ensure that the funds were properly spent and accounted for."
The panel also included Bob Taylor, the RFU Council member for East
Midlands, and Peter Baines, the RFU Council member for Hertfordshire.
