Bromsgrove 33 Rugby Lions 50

Match report and pictures by Dave Rushall

After the euphoria of clinching the league title two weeks ago at Burton, Rugby Lions came back to earth with a bump at bottom club Bromsgrove. A neutral watching this game would have been pushed to work out which team was at the top of the table and which was holding the rest up.

A combination of poor defence, wrong options and strong running from the home backs allowed Bromsgrove to build up a lead of 12 points going into the last quarter. It was only with 10 minutes of the game remaining that Rugby took the lead for the first time. Without taking anything away from Bromsgrove, it indicates the level of performance by the Lions, that this was the most points conceded by them and the most scored by Bromsgrove all season.

Bromsgrove kicked off with a strong wind at their backs and scored a converted try early on.

Lions responded with Denzil feeding the excellent Alex Nash on half way to score under the posts after lovely side step around the fullback. Glenn converted to even the scores.

A further converted try by the home side was cancelled out when one of many storming runs from No.8 Danny Facer was held just a couple of metres of the try line. Danny however managed to slip the ball to the supporting Sam Viggers to touch down.

The second quarter belonged to Bromsgrove who added two more tries to make for an unlikely half time score.

Half Time: - Burton 26 Rugby Lions 14

With the wind at their backs the second half belonged mainly to the Lions although they did allow the home side another converted try with the assistance of a fortunate bounce of the ball.

Lions scored six tries in the second half with Matt Davies scoring three and Dave Clements, Dave Jackson and Steve Stewart adding the others.

The game was not of the best quality, although with a total of thirteen tries scored (5-8), it was quite an entertaining affair although the Lions did leave it very late to secure the victory.

Bromsgrove Preview

Yes there is a league game for the Lions to play this coming weekend. At the end of this season the fixture list is liberally peppered with vacant Saturdays so, having effectively gained promotion by winning at Burton, and with no home games until the month’s end, supporters could be forgiven for thinking that the season is already over.

Rugby’s target for Saturday is the Worcestershire town of Bromsgrove whose rugby team is undergoing the sort of season that the Lions endured just three seasons ago in National Division1. The Worcestershire club has failed to win any league games so far this season. Study of their Review of 2004/05 in the RFU Directory suggests that they diced with relegation last season but staved it off with some late good results that included giving eventual champions Leicester Lions a run for their money. Apart from Rugby Lions the only remaining scalp left for them this time around is Dunstablians at Houghton Regis a the end of the month.

Although automatic promotion can only be forfeited by losing their last two games by big margins, consequent with Bedford Athletic winning their two games by cricket scores, Rugby Lions are honour bound to keep up the level of skill and determination that has got them into their current position. Winning after having ‘won’ is not as easy as it may appear to be!
