Rugby Lions completed their return campaign to
National 3 North with a creditable draw against Darlington Mowden Park
who they beat 36-0 on the opening day of the season at Webb Ellis Road.
Both sides scored three converted tries and a penalty goal, and a draw
was probably a fair result in an open and entertaining game.
The opening thirty minutes belonged to DMP with Rugby
unable to get out of their own half, and having to defend somewhat
desperately at times. When Lions did finally get into home territory
through some good driving runs the maul was halted and the home side
awarded the put-in. Park’s number eight picked up at the base and fed
scrum-half Andy Forman who scythed through some ineffectual defence from
his own 22 to score an opportunist try under the posts. Ben Snook
converted to give the home side a 7-0 lead.
Not to be out done, Toby Handley replied in a similar
vein, and although he couldn’t make the line, the support was there in
the form of locks James Wadey and Neil Underhill, (yes Flapper was
dragged out of retirement to bolster Lion’s depleted numbers!!) who
touched down under the posts for a try, converted by James Hawken. Dom
Wareing then went on a typical run and fed Warren Coles on the left who
looked favourite to score, but he was bundled into touch two metres
short.
Half Time: - Darlington Mowden Park 7 Rugby Lions 7
Lions stepped up a gear in the second half and Lloyd
Saunders knocked the ball on with the try line beckoning. Lions turned
the scrum and pinched the ball and a powerful run by Tristan Wati
enabled Toby Handley to burst through on the blind side to dive over,
but the try was disallowed for a foot on the touchline. From the
throw-in, Lions got a maul rolling from about ten metres, which proved
unstoppable. I was unable to identify the scorer, but Hawks converted
for 7-14 lead. With Alex Nash on for Saunders and Matt Davies for
Overton, Lion’s pack was beginning to gain the upper hand, but a lack of
cohesion in the back line, led to a simple interception try under the
posts for Ian Dixon against the run of play. Snook converted to tie the
scores at 14-14.
With the home side struggling to provide good ball up
front, James Hawken gave Rugby the lead with a penalty for not
releasing. Park responded well and put Rugby under some pressure and
were rewarded with a penalty in front of the posts to tie the score at
17-17. A string of penalty decisions then went in the home side’s favour
and eventually they opted for a kick at goal, although this was pushed
wide of the posts.
Quick ball from a ruck on the home 22 enabled Glenn
Bond to spin out a long pass, and although it fell short, the ball
reached Dom on the bounce, who found James Hawken, then replacement
Michael Rust, and he was able to skin the defence on the outside for an
excellent try. Hawken again converted to re-instate Rugby’s seven point
lead.
With time running out, it looked as though Rugby were
going to achieve another away victory, but that was denied when home
fly-half Lewis Farrar broke through to score a lovely try under the
posts, and with kicker Snook having been replaced, converted himself to
tie the match.
This brings another successful season to a close, and
although we were on top of the league for a while, fourth place is a
position that most supporters would have settled for at the beginning of
the season. We can build on this next season and hopefully challenge for
automatic promotion. With Blaydon winning the league and gaining
automatic promotion, let’s hope that Tynedale can win their play-off
next Saturday to go up with them and reduce next season's travelling
expenses. |

Darlington Mowden Park Preview
Last Saturday, although they lost their last home
game to visitors, Tynedale, the Lions did have an effect on the issue of
promotion. Their rearguard offensive in an already lost game against the
now 14 men from Corbridge was sufficiently effective as to deny them the
all important fourth try with its concomitant bonus point. Blaydon had
no such problem at home to Hull Ionians and now occupy the much
sought-after automatic promotion place. Such are the follies of
unlicensed aggression and the red cards that accompany them.
Darlington Mowden Park’s playing record this season
is heavily biased in favour of home successes with ten out of twelve
victories secured on their own turf and ten of twelve defeats sustained
on the road. Prior to last Saturday’s 13-22 loss at home to Leicester
Lions their only home defeat was to league leaders Blaydon and that by a
single point
So can the Rugby Lions emulate their Midland
neighbours and also get a result at Yiewsley Drive in the last game of
the season. If they do, and if Blaydon do a ‘Lions job’ at Lightfoot
Green, Tynedale will be playing off for promotion at Westcombe Park or
Southend and Rugby would recover third place. How about a grandstand
finish then?
Congratulations to Phil ‘Greengrass’ Greenbury on his
150th 1st XV appearance last Saturday. Finally,
many thanks go to the whole squad and its minders for a great season
that has finally banished the gloom of recent years |
