Rugby Lions returned to winning ways completing a
comfortable double over lowly Orrell at a bright and mostly sunny Webb
Ellis Road. Lions opened the scoring after only 35 seconds following a
break from Dominic Wareing. The support was provided by Hales who, in
the act of being tackled, lobbed the ball expertly to James Hawken who
found space to score in the left corner. The try scorer converted
superbly from the touchline for a 7-0 lead.
Rugby’s game plan was to run everything, although
this did lead to a few handling errors with the wet ball. Lion’s next
try came during a downpour in the thirteenth minute, again involving
Hales down the left wing. This time the supporting Danny Facer claimed
the try in the corner. Hawken again converted from the touchline for a
14-0 lead. Strong runs from Tommy Booth and Dominic Wareing put James
Hawken in space down the right but as the tackle came in he failed to
see Michael Rust who was clear on his right shoulder and the chance was
lost. The subsequent play then became very scrappy with both sides
making numerous handling errors. In the thirty second minute Orrell were
penalised for handling on the floor and James Hawken made no mistake to
make the score 17-0.
Lions then spurned a glorious chance after James
Hawken came into the line and chipped over the defenders for Michael
Rust to take. He drew the fullback and passed inside to Tim Douglas who
was unopposed and ten metres from the try line. The ball slipped out of
his grasp however and the danger was cleared to Orrell’s 22. Rugby kept
the pressure on and following an eight man shove, the pack turned the
ball over and Phil Greenbury slipped the ball to Toby Handley who
crashed over from close range. James Hawken just pulled the ball wide of
the left upright to end the first half scoring.
Half Time: - Rugby Lions 22 Orrell 0
Lions replaced Tim Douglas with Peter Glackin at the
start of the second half, and a lovely back’s move reminiscent of some
of the early season play, led to Hawks coming into the back line at
speed, but with Ade Hales free on his left shoulder he again chose to
take the tackle. The ball was kept alive, however and Orrell were
penalised for offside. The three points were spurned in favour of a five
metre lineout, which proved to be a wise decision as Rugby’s drive was
unstoppable, and Phil Greenbury claimed the fourth try and the extra
bonus point. The conversion attempt was again pulled to the left of the
posts.
A lovely break from Toby Handley was halted by a
tackle which appeared to be rather on the high side except by the
referee, although in the ensuing ruck, Orrell’s scrum half came through
and took out Toby while the ball was still in, and he was shown a yellow
card. Worse was to follow for Orrell when their hooker was also given
ten minutes in the sin bin for stamping. Danny Facer, Phil Greenbury and
Ade Hales were replaced by Paul Thompson, Matt Davies and Warren Coles
and with the visitors down to thirteen players you would have expected
the Lions to increase their lead. Due to some wrong options and sloppy
play, Orrell managed to play out the ten minutes without conceding until
some good clearing out by Matt Lister gave Tristan Wati a sight of the
try line, and you don’t stop him from five metres. The conversion again
drifted left to leave the score at 32-0.
A misunderstanding between two Lion’s players in
front of their own posts allowed Orrell the initiative and produced a
consolation converted try for their No3 after 75 minutes. Lions came
back and a lovely reverse pass from Wareing almost allowed Rust through.
Orrell were penalised at the resulting ruck for handling on the floor
and the culprit was shown another yellow card. Lions chose to take the
scrum and were perhaps a little fortunate to be awarded a penalty try
when the visitors broke early and the referee got in the way of Toby
Handley’s pass. James Hawken converted to increase Lion’s lead to 39-7.
The feisty side of Orrell’s play came to the fore
when, from the restart, Alex Nash was hit hard by their hooker whilst
still in the air. Alex took exception to this and handbags were flying
in all directions. When the referee finally gained control, the Orrell
hooker was shown a second yellow card, followed by a red.
This was Neil "Flapper" Underhill’s last game for the
Lions before retirement and he was carried off the pitch by a couple of
Lion’s players only to be dumped on his back into a muddy puddle. He has
given fifteen years service to Rugby Lions and his efforts are much
appreciated by all their supporters. We wish him well for the future and
hope to see him in the clubhouse supporting Lion’s cause. |

Orrell Preview
It looks as if the Lions chances of gaining a second
successive promotion back into National 2 have finally evaporated,
though for many of us it was never a seriously considered aspiration for
this season. It is, however a pleasure to be at the tail end of a season
without the need to win at all costs, be it for promotion or to avoid
relegation.
Relegation has already arrived for Saturday’s visitors Orrell, who
have been in freefall all season. Hopefully for them the nitty-gritty of
the hotly contested regional North 1 division will revive their general
fortunes as last season in Midlands 1 did for Rugby.
Orrell have lost 19 of their 20 games this time round with just one
drawn against Cleckheaton at Edge Hall Road.
According to the Rugby Times preview, Lions second row, Neil
Underhill will be playing his last game against Orrell on Saturday
before retiring. Neil, who graduated through minis, juniors and colts,
will well remember his early first appearance at Edge Hall Road in March
1993 opposite the legendary Bob Kimmins and Charles Cusani. Those were
the days!
Rugby gave away the second half of the first game at Edge Hall Road
but still won comfortably. Today they have to be more clinical and less
generous in order to get their show back on the road, ready for the
sterner tests still to come.
