Rugby Under 12’s 30 points
v St Andrews Under
12’s 5 points
Lions worked hard to gain the upper hand in a tense match with local
rivals St Andrews on a great day for Rugby football. Both sets of
forwards competed equally but Kyle Webster, playing out of position,
drove through for the first try. Rugby’s backs were on top form and
their influential captain Kiron Phillips scored a fine try to put Rugby
10 points up at the break. In the second half Rugby attacked
strongly to score a further 4 tries from Ben Warman, James Scott, Rich
Bannister and Kiron Phillips but St Andrews worked hard for a
consolation try wide out. This was a strong team performance and
everybody contributed, but Luke Smith for his hard work in the tight and
strength in the loose deserves special mention.

Willenhall 0 The Rugby Lions U14’s 36. Sunday 4th February
A perfect winters morning saw another heavily depleted Lions squad
take on a strong Willenhall.
Conditions were perfect for a fast game and from the off both sides
took advantage of the weather. After a short period of end to end rugby
a cutting run from Jack put Willenhall on the back foot, quick hands
sent replacement Josh over in the corner – Greg converting.
The following 15 - 20mins saw both sides testing, probing and
battling at each others line looking to make that decisive break. The
Lions forwards obliged sending the backs on another punishing run with
Josh crossing for Rugby’s second try – Greg converting. The restart saw
Chris return the ball 20m, quality ball from the ensuing forwards gave
Jove the option to kick and chase a further 40m down field his pressure
tackle setting up Jack for his first and the Lions third – Greg
converting.
Willenhall were soon under the cosh again, great running lines from
Rhys, Dom and Aaron soon had Josh crossing for his third – unconverted.
This quick succession of tries seemed to fire Willenhall into action.
From the restart the Lions found themselves fixed to their own try line
fighting off wave after wave of forwards looking to pull one back for
the home crowd but huge determination from Henry, Ryan and all prevented
them from succeeding, the half time whistle finally blew.
As the first half finished the second began, the opposition wanted
points on the score board. Fortunately an initial 10 minute onslaught
was turned into attack. Starting from a Ben block Dan gained valuable
yards before the ball travelled the backs from Paul to Dom who cut a
superb line to release Rhys to finish off this well worked try –
unconverted.
As ever the forwards had to have the last word, good hands from Tom
sent Ryan off on a determined run drawing his opposite number before
offloading creating the gap for Sam to pass through for the Lions sixth
and final try – unconverted.
A hearty effort from all, worth mentioning Greg who bossed his pack
superbly but man on the match went to Jovian for an excellent all round
performance.
Leicester Forest East 0-22 Lions
Another fine and gusty display from Lions saw them through to this
win. In the 1st half Lions were completely dominant, showing great
skills from backs and forwards. Lions' 1st try was scored by the pacy
Matt Brazier touching down under the posts. A rolling maul was
then finished off by hooker Ben Clarke going over for the 2nd try. Lions
finished the the half strongly and scored a well deserved try just
before halftime through Matt Brazier. In the second half Lions were less
dominant, understandibly because of the loss of Matt Haycock with a
shoulder injury leaving Lions with only 14 players. Brilliant
defence from Lions kept Forest at bay and they managed to score one more
try from Ben Hartwell to give them a 22-0 victory. One conversion in the
match was scored by Stuart Houghton. Credit must be given to the lads
for showing great character yet again against a very tough side.
