23/12/07 - Rugby Lions u13s - 47 points  v  Stoke Old Boys u 13s - 12 points

In spite of the cold weather Rugby turned up early for an hours training before defending their proud unbeaten record against a competitive Stoke Old Boys side.  Rugby’s back three are encouraged to get involved whenever possible and this week Jonny Ure, Shaun Smith and James Scott linked well for Ure and Smith to score two great tries.  Throughout the match Rugby’s threequarters functioned like a well-oiled machine defending brilliantly and attacking with style to allow Tom Swindell to score twice and Shaun Smith to round off the half with another fine effort.  Harry Parsons was in good form with the boot and converted all 5 tries.  Stoke started the second half in a determined mood and pressurized Rugby hard but the Lions forwards fought back for Will Tuite-Dalton to explode off the back of a scrum for a great try and Alex Kukielko barged over to score a fine forwards try.  Harry Parsons converted the final try to complete the scoring.  Stoke deserve credit for competing so strongly throughout and were rewarded with two tries of their own.  The Lions performed well as individuals but particularly well as a team and so Father Christmas voted everyone ‘Man of the Match’.

23.12.07 - Rugby Lions u14s 48 points v Newbold u14s 0 points

The Lions served up an 8 try xmas feast of rugby at Parkfield Road. With the Lions dominant in the scrum and rucks they used the ball to good effect. First half tries came from "G" Matthews (2),Harry Ellis (1),George Williams (2) with Dylan Roberts kicking 2 conversions. With the slope in their favour Rugby ran every thing at Newbold with further tries coming from Harry Ellis , Edward Scott (2) and George Williams with Dylan Roberts kicking 2 conversions. The best of the 8 tries being a move which started deep in Lions territory with several Lions players involved from start to finish culminated in a fantastic team try from Edward Scott. To be fair to Newbold they had chances to score but stout defence from Rugby kept the score to zero. MOTM must be for Olly Machon for his tireless work rate at the breakdown and tackling. Robert Mackenzie also impressed at wing forward. The Lions also gave debuts to Jamie Scott and Raj who both had good games. Well done to all the squad for rounding of 2007 with a very impressive performance.

06/01/08 - Rugby Lions u7s v Kenilworth u7s

First game back after Christmas saw the U7's take to the field against a strong Kenilworth team with twice as many players as their counterparts. The game started but the young Lions seemed to be half asleep quickly going 2 tries down, this seemed to kick start the lads who then started to play good work saw Charlie score after good work from Solomon. H/T 1-3 to Kenilworth, the second half started better and Vincent from the restart scoring an excellent solo effort, 2 further tries from Kenilworth followed, the Lions had the last say with Angus scoring after Matthew made an excellent break to release Angus for the score.

2nd Game: This game saw the Lions apply the pressure from the start with Vincent scoring, Kenilworth responded with try of there own. From the restart a fumble from the Lions saw Kenilworth score there 2nd try. This time from the restart some swift passing and running saw Vincent go over for his 2nd try of the game. The restart saw Kenilworth making steady progress until a turn over saw Matthew run in the Lions 3rd try. H/T 3 -2 the second half saw both Solomon and Charlie score tries for the Lions with Kenilworth scoring 2 tries too, final score 5-4 to the Lions.

3rd Game: This game took its toll on the lads, with only 7 players they had played every minute. The first half saw both teams swapping tries with Angus, Finn and Josh scoring for the Lions H/T 3-3. The second half Kenilworth scored there 4th try, from the restart a knock saw Kenilworth move forward with menace then an excellent interception from Finn saw him break through the Kenilworth defence to score. There was just time for Kenilworth to score the winning try. F/T 4-5 to Kenilworth.

3 great games of rugby played by 2 equally matched teams, well done to both sets of players. A special mention goes to Jake Jones who was voted player of the month, well done Jake keep up the hard work you are putting in.

Rugby Lions u9s triumph in try bonanza

In this exciting encounter Rugby Lions Under 9’s showed their skills to run in a feast of tries.

Game 1 won 4-2 - In the first game Lions mounted pressure from the kick off. With strong runs from Caitlin Revan, Matty Tildesley and Jordi Pocknell the Kenilworth defence were always on the retreat.

Pressure paid as Caitlin Revan rushed over for the opening score. Lions then changed their tactics to defence with Findlay Williamson making some excellent tackles. Ben Clayton proved to be an effective barrier as he stopped Kenilworth in their tracks.

Lions switched back to attack, with Zak Wright making a great cross-field run to put Lions in a great position. Jamie Carwardine then darted through to score the second try.

Kenilworth then mounted a series of attacks and took a try back. This spurred Lions back into attack with Harry Cash pushing his team mates forward.

The second half started with a crunching tackle from Jamie Carwardine which saved an almost certain try. Caitlin Revan then marched forward but was stopped just short of the line. Matty Tildesley then took up the cause and dived over for try number three.

Ran Scott and Caitlin then made storming runs to move Lions up the field only to see Kenilworth sneak the ball and run end to end to score a try. Lions came back strongly and drove Matty over for the final score.  Won 4-2.

Second game Won 4-1 - In the second game Lions were equally effective as Ran Scott took a hat trick of tries and Jacob Hardy-King poached a try.

Oliver Lee had probably his best game of the season as he ran with the ball and rucked at every opportunity.

Jacob Hardy-King, Kieran Lorimer and Jack Cave all had great runs to make impressive yardage. Good support from Reece and Dominic allowed Zak Wright and Dominic Deery to make mazy runs which always confused Kenilworth to let in the determined Ran Scott for his tries. After a jinking run

Jacob Hardy-King squeezed over for a try to seal another impressive win.

Zak Wright was voted player of the match.

Rugby Lions U11s – 0 points v Kenilworth U11s 70 points

The young Lions came upon against a Kenilworth team who appeared to be well drilled and were physically bigger. Time after time the Kenilworth pack bullied their way through the Lions, who tackled and rucked over and over again. The Lions pack, Kezia Bull, Lewis Arbuthnott, Hugh Deery, Jack Worral-Soper and Racheal Scott just didn’t know when to give up despite conceding 8 first half tries. With big hearts, the brave Lions went into the second half to continue to face the constant barrage of Kenilworth. The biggest of the Kenilworth players taking 3 and sometimes 4 players to bring him down, leaving men over to run in the tries. But the Lions carried on right to the final whistle. This was a brave performance by the young Lions, who maybe showed a little inexperience, but definitely showed that they were fighters.

Squad: Aaron Martin, Kaeden O’Neill, Jack Swift, Lewis Arbuthnott, Kezia Bull, Hugh Deery, Lucas Gregory, Joe Cullum, Concobhar Jolliffe-Grimes, Racheal Scott, Jack Worrall-Soper, Thomas Price and Man of the match Oliver Beight.

Rugby Lions U13s - 14 points   v   Market Bosworth U13’s - 15 points

On a bright crisp day Rugby Lions and Market Bosworth served up some exhilarating Rugby in the first of two matches.  Rugby started slowly and powerful Bosworth monopolized loose possession to score two unconverted tries either side of half time.  Rugby fought back strongly in the second half and after a period of pressure the backs linked well to put Jonny Ure in for a fine try wide out converted brilliantly by Harry Parsons.  In such a close match try scoring opportunities were at a premium and from a penalty under their own posts Rugby’s wayward kick went straight to Bosworth’s winger who ran in virtually unopposed.  This proved to be the final difference between the two sides but Lions dug deep to fight out the remaining minutes deep in Bosworth’s territory.  Shaun Smith scored another fine try again converted by Harry Parsons to offer a slim hope of victory but time ran out and Lions were big enough to accept defeat but nevertheless annoyed to allow Bosworth to steal their unbeaten record by 1 point.

Rugby U13s - 22 points   v  Market Bosworth U13s - 14 points

Rugby and Bosworth utilized their large squads for the second match and Lions started in a determined mood.  Jonny Ure broke free to score after a fine run by Stitch Loydall but Bosworth lived up to their billing as one of the best Under 13’s sides to visit Webb Ellis Road this season and scored a converted try in return.  Within minutes, Stitch Loydall looking in fine form, scored a great long distance try converted by Kiron Phillips to re-take the lead.  Bosworth roared into the second half and scored almost immediately under Lions posts to take the lead for the final time but Rugby would not be outdone as they dominated possession for the remainder of the match to allow Jonny Ure a try after a display of fine soccer skills and Zack Baldwin a great individual effort after a quick tap penalty on half way.  Daniel Martin was deservedly voted ‘man of the match’ over both matches and Zack Baldwin Player of the Month.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Market Bosworth U14s – 36 points v Rugby Lions U14s – 0 points

This scoreline probably did not do the Lions justice as they conceeded 2 tries just before half time both from defensive errors. The work rate up to then had been impressive as the Lions thwarting every MB attack. The back row of Matthews, Ellis and Dixon caused MB plenty of problems. With plenty of ball won by the forwards Rugby failed to convert possession and pressure into points. With the scrum and line out working well the closest the Lions came was George Williams just knocking the ball on inches from the MB try line. They should have scored again near half time only for a Lions forward to be penalised on the MB 5 meter line when a try looked certain with MB defence stretched.
The 2nd half saw MB pull further away with 4 more tries mainly coming from Lions defensive errors again. The lads raised their game for the last minutes and again should have scored twice themselves but white line fever set in when the better option to spin the ball wide when Rugby had clear overlaps.
Take nothing away from MB their defence was sound and always seemed to have 2 or 3 covering players. The Lions need to be more clinical in scoring areas and more alert in defence especially when the ball is kicked behind them.

Rugby Lions U8s v Kenilworth U8s

Lions played 3 matches against Kenilworth, shockingly losing the first 6:9, only to redeem themselves by winning the last two 8:4 and 8:6

Match 1: Lions 6 – Kenilworth 9. This provided a rude wake up call to the Lions squad. Despite leading 5:3 at half time, a lack of concentration and a poor defensive line in the second half allowed Kenilworth to score 5 tries in quick succession. There were 6 commendable tries from Tom Partridge (2); Sam Wright (2); Callum Hopkin and Aidan Wardle, but this was undoubtedly a game that Rugby lost in defence rather than failing to win in attack.

Match 2: Lions 8 – Kenilworth 4. Stinging from the loss of the first match, Lions were determined to win this one. The team started to work together. The defensive line was strong and the tagging relentless. In attack, the passing was fluid, well timed and generous as the players moved beautifully into superb supporting positions. Tactics practised in training were successfully deployed and morale bounced back. Deservedly, Lions romped home with a win. It was almost as if another team had sauntered onto the pitch! Tries were provided by Sam Wright; Jack Wooliscroft (4); Ben Downing (2 ) and Tom Partridge. The teamwork was fabulous to watch, and in particular John Turland and James Smith, new to the game this season, really found their passing form.

Match 3: Lions 8 – Kenilworth 6. Lions team play just got better and better in this, the third and final game. The switch, rapidly becoming our signature move, was greatly admired by the Kenilworth coach and was beautifully executed by numerous pairings. Tries were provided by Sam Wright (5); Callum Hopkin; Tom Partridge and Aidan Wardle.

All the mornings try scorers are to be congratulated, but we mustn’t forget their team mates who by a terrific tag, a perfect pass, a beautiful block or a robust run helped make the morning a great one: Vinnie Deery, Louis Mitchell, Sam Davies, Sophie Harris and William Gregory.

Sam Wright was awarded player of the month. Well done Sam!

Rugby Lions U13s - 10 points v Shipston on Stour U13s - 5 points

Rugby’s forwards competed equally with their larger opponents allowing their fast backs to constantly probe for openings but Shipston’s defense held firm until Kiron Phillips, once again back on form, forced his way over wide out for the first try.  Shipston are no push-overs though and they forced their way back into the match with a hard worked try just before half time.  Unfortunately for Shipston they did not make enough of the strong following wind when it was in their favour and they could not deny Rugby victory when Kyle Webster scorched down the wing to beat 4 players for the match winner ably converted by Kiron Phillips.  This was a good performance by all players and they deserve credit for their commitment and skill in the poor conditions.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Rugby Lions U13s - 7 points v Kenilworth U13s - 19 points

In a close fought match Rugby battled bravely against the wind throughout the first half but let their guard slip in the final minutes to concede a converted try.  Hopes were high in the second half but Kenilworth kept their noses in front as the match swayed to and fro.  Eventually Zack Baldwin took a quick penalty and drove over the line from 20 yards dragging half of Kenilworth with him for a great try converted by Harry Parsons to tie the scores.  From the kick off Rugby hesitated and spurned the chance to clear downfield - this was a fatal mistake as Kenilworth capitalized and scored the softest try of the day to re-take the lead.  With time running out Rugby went for the equalizer but Kenilworth’s speedy winger collected a chip ahead on his own 22 to run the length of the field for the final score - heartbreaking stuff!  Stitch Loydall was voted man of the match for his classy performance

Rugby Lions U14s – 15 points v Kenilworth U14s – 5 points

Playing against the wind in the 1st half , the Lions struggled to get into the game as Kenilworth used the elements to keep the Lions under pressure. For all K’s pressure they only managed 1 try. They should have scored more but for great tackling from Declan George at fullback. No 8 Matthews kept the Lions going forward supported by fellow back row player Ellis kept K’s at bay.

Playing with the wind Rugby soon levelled when Matthews scored from close range. With the Lions winning plenty of ball they kept K’s penned in their own 22 which led to the Lions taking the lead through Wagstaff when a quick interchange of passes through the forwards allowed Wagstaff the score. The Lions were denied another try minutes later when Matthews broke from a ruck and driven over by several team mates only for the referee to be unsighted with all the bodies in the way. The Lions were not to be denied another try when Matthews picked up from a 5m scrum and popped the pass to winger Williams to score out wide. Weather conditions dictated a very forwards orientated game in very heavy pitch.

Rugby Lions U16s – 17 points v Kenilworth U16s – 12 points

Wild and wet conditions governed this fixture. Missed tackles cost the Lions two tries. Playing into the wind, Kenilworth opened the scoring with a well worked try for their right wing. The Lions hit back after a sustained period of pressure in Kenilworth's 22 as Holroyd burrowed in from a quick tapped penalty. Unable to gain the upper hand, the Lions' backs were again made to pay for a missed tackle and Kenilworth moved ahead with a converted score.
The Lions hit back again as the forwards took control and mauled their way over the line for Bennett to claim the try which Harrington converted. In the second half the Lions played into the stiffening wind. An exceptional performance from the forwards gained the Lions good field position and a well rehearsed backs move saw Tom Miller score in the corner. A massive defensive effort was needed and the Lions were up to the task. Great work in the lineout from Tucker secured much needed defensive ball and great defence from Pollard, Maxwell & Tompkins ensured that Kenilworth could not cross the Lions' line. A delightful piece of skill between Rowland and Gordon allowed the Lions to break out of defence and from the attacking phases that followed both Machon and Spiby crossed Kenilworth's line only to be buried at the bottom of a ruck and the referee could not award a try.

This was a good game, hard fought but overall the Lions just deserved the victory.

Rugby U13s - 17 points v Stratford upon Avon U13s - 7 points

This was a titanic struggle between two very accomplished sides and Stratford scored first with a great long distance try after an opening spell that see-sawed to and fro.  The rest of the first half was evenly contested with both sides attacking one minute and defending the next.  Harry Parsons took over from the injured Rich Bannister to put in a very confident performance and spur the team on to eventual victory.

The second half started with Rugby on the attack and Shaun Smith scored a hat trick of tries that was full testament to his strength, speed and skill. Harry Parsons converted the final try to clinch victory and the man of the match trophy.  Overall this was an awesome performance that went a long way to wipe out memories of last week’s defeat.

Rugby U13s - 14 points   v   Stratford upon Avon 13’s - 10 points

Both teams utilized their large squads to play out a second highly competitive fixture but Rugby stole an advantage when stand-in Captain Will Tuite-Dalton surged over for the opening try converted by Harry Parsons.  Stratford could not be denied however and they stormed back to score an unconverted try after a period of prolonged pressure.  James Scott opened the second half with a trademark try and Harry Parsons kicked the crucial conversion.  Rugby then scorned several scoring opportunities and almost inevitably Stratford scored again to set up a frantic last few minutes but in the end Rugby held on for a well deserved victory.

Rugby’s display over the two matches was very impressive, their fine attacking play and aggressive defence eventually wearing Stratford down.  Kyle Webster, Jack Hawkins and Rory Holmes ran Ryan Masters close but Ryan was deservedly rewarded with the man of the match trophy for his all action display.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Stratford Upon Avon U14s Development squad 0 v 30 Rugby Lions U14s Development

Rugby took a squad of 26 players down to Stratford and played 2 games. The 1st a development game gave the Lions newcomers some match experience aided by 4 senior players. The Lions scored 6 tries through Greg Matthews 2 , Michael Ashwood 1, Lewis Quinn 2 and Tom Findley 1.

Stratford Upon Avon U14s 20 v 17 Rugby Lions U14s

The 2nd match was for the more experienced players among the squad. Stratford were first to score when the Lions had absorbed 10 minutes of pressure and were caught out by their big No 8 out wide. The Lions were quick to respond and levelled the game when Jake Wagstaff took a pass from Greg Matthews and smashes his way over the line from close range. Stratford restored their lead just before half time after some panic defence from the Lions allowed them a score. Rugby came out all guns blazing and levelled the score after the ball was spun wide through the backs allowing center Tom Findley the score in the far corner. Rugby increased their lead when Greg Matthews scored a trade mark no 8 try from the ruck 5metres out. The Lions should have scored 2 more tries but the wrong option was takes and the chances gone. Stratford sensed a come back when their centre out stripped the Lions defence to score. With the score standing at 17-15 to Rugby the next try was going to be crucial, but it was Stratford who got the winner 5 minutes from time. Rugby were awarded a couple of penalties which they opted to take quickly but they fizzled out as the Stratford defence held firm to the final whistle. MOTM for Rugby must again go to Olly Machon who had to play in both games, but never failed to impress with his work rate around the park.

Rugby Lions Mini & Junior Match Reports – 27/01/2008

Match 1: Rugby Lions U13’s - 24 points  v  Towcester U13’s - 12 points

After only two defeats in the first half of the season Rugby are full of confidence and it shows in their play but Towcester are tough opposition and the first game was extremely tight.  Rugby’s try machine Shaun Smith, scored two long distance tries before Towcester came back with a good try aided by just a hint of poor tackling from Rugby.  Forewarned about Towcester’s forward power Rugby’s pack knuckled down and dominated the forward exchanges to provide sufficient possession for Shaun Smith to score his hat trick-try converted by Harry Parsons.  During the second half Tom Swindell made a welcome return to the scoreboard with a fine individual effort again converted by Harry Parsons before Towcester completed the scoring.

Match 2: Rugby Lions U13’s - 48 points   v    Towcester U13’s - 0 points

Rugby showed their impressive strength in depth to overpower Towcester in the second match of the day and although everybody played well Grant Northcott, Daniel Martin and Kyle Webster were in particularly fine form.  Grant Northcott scored first and Will Tuite-Dalton again drove over for a fine forwards try before Alex Kukielko, Daniel Martin, Ben Warman (twice) and Alex Andersen-Doig (twice) completed a very successful mornings work with four of these tries being expertly converted by Harry Parsons.  At the moment Rugby possess a formidable squad and they should all be proud of their efforts – they all deserve to represent Rugby Lions at this level.  Once again there were many valid candidates for ’Man of the Match’ but Daniel Martin eventually got the nod for his committed performance in both matches.

3/2/08

Rugby Lions U9s go Large on Lichfield

Game 1: Drew 0 – 0.

In this hard fought contest Oran Aske-Haley personified the Lions with his Bulldog determination in defence and his flair in attack. Following Oran’s example Matty Tildesley was equally adept at ripping the opposition ball and setting free the Lions on their rampages into the opposition territory.

Ran Scott and Dominic Deery made sniping runs from all areas of the field in an attempt to find that elusive first score. Jamie Carwardine with his trademark mazy runs made good yardage. Caitlin Revan showed her determination by driving on with the ball at every opportunity.

On every occasion the Lions were stopped short of the line by a well marshalled Lichfield defence.

In the second half Jordi Pocknell and Findlay Williamson took up the challenge and tried to breach the Lichfield line only to be stopped with last gasp tackles. In the final minute Jack Cave combined with Oran Aske-Haley to set him free but was pushed into touch short of the try line.

Game 2: lost 5 – 0.

Although the Lions Development side showed some great determination and produced some excellent passages of play they were bulldozed by Lichfield.

There was an outstanding performance from Oliver Lee on his return to the side after Surgery in the New Year. Oliver’s tackling and rucking seem to have benefited from his enforced absence.

Kieran Lorimer, Ran Scott and Zak Wright created a good backs partnership who showed some fluid running Rugby. Up front with Callum Goodall, Robert Jupp and Ben Clayton the rucking and mauling was excellent. Dominic Deery was persistent and made some very positive contributions.

Lichfield were able to sneak over in the corner in the last minute to a victory 5 – 0.

Game 3: won 5 – 1.

In a total reversal of fortunes Lions showed the Opposition exactly what they were capable of. With some excellent coaching from Martin Large the Lions dominated the game.

Caitlin Revan’s power in midfield was matched by the mercurial runs of Jamie Carwardine as together with quick hands from Findlay Williamson, Zak Wright and Jack Cave the Lions made good progress up the field. As the try line beckoned for the Lions they were pushed into touch to be denied what would have been a well worked team try.

Jordi Pocknell then led the way with 2 superb tries including one which he started behind his own line and then sprinted the whole length of the pitch to touch down, before he was invited to leave the field.

Oran Aske-Haley was again strong in attack. After some wise words from the coach he tiptoed through the opposition to score almost unopposed. Not to be outdone Matty Tildesley and Kieran Lorimer recorded their tries to make it a convincing win for the Lions.

With honours even this was a rousing display of Junior Rugby.

Match 1: Rugby Lions U13s - 10 points    v   Market Bosworth U13s - 12 points

With a strong wind at their backs Lions worked hard to build up a lead for them to defend in the second half.  The first 10 minutes were evenly contested in mid-field but after several strong attacks were repelled by Bosworth, Shaun Smith maintained his impressive try scoring record with a great individual effort as he surged down the touch line leaving would-be tacklers in his wake.  Shortly after this Zac Baldwin scored a second well worked try half way out, but the ball could have been touched down closer to the posts and the resulting missed conversion was crucial.  As expected, roles were reversed in the second half and in spite of Rugby’s valiant defense Bosworth scored two great tries and rather annoyingly converted one of them to win the match.  This was a great game contested by two evenly matched, highly skilled teams and although the Rugby crowd waved and cheered throughout, they just could not drag their heroes over the finishing line.

Match 2: Rugby Lions U13s - 17 points    v   Market Bosworth U13s - 17 points

The second game was another tight affair and was marred only by injury to Ben Bramley who had to leave the field for hospital treatment.  Ben is becoming very important to Rugby and will be sorely missed for the next couple of weeks.  James Scott opened the scoring with a turbo charged sprint down the touchline but Bosworth fought back and after a period of sustained pressure took the lead with two well deserved tries.  Bosworth also scored a converted try at the start of the second half for a 12 point lead and with the strong wind now behind them, things looked grim for Rugby.  In fact Bosworth would have scored again except for Rory Holmes’ fine last ditch tackle, and from then on Bosworth learned the same lesson that England learned against Wales and with time running out Tom Swindell and Jonny Ure scored two great long distance tries.  The first was converted by Harry Parsons but the final twist came as Harry Parsons lined up the second from in front of the posts to win the match when the ball blew over during his run up and the chance was gone.  Over both matches Tom Swindell, Shaun Smith, James Scott and Stitch Loydall deserve a special mention for their very committed performances.

10/2/08

Berkswell & Balsall U14s 0 v Rugby Lions U14s 26

The Lions took a squad of 16 over to B&B which included several development players. From the kick off B&B attacked the Lions and nearly scored but for a brilliant tap tackle from Centre George Williams 5m short of their try line. From that wake up call the Lions quickly settled into their stride. Hooker Machon dominated at the scrum taking several against the head which the Lions took full advantage of. The Lions worked the ball down the pitch with crisp ball handling and Centre Quine taking a crash ball from Flyhalf Clarke which he converted. Playing into a strong wind the Lions chose the right option of keeping the ball in hand and using their pace and power to get behind the B&B defence. No8 Jake Wagstaff added another try soon afterwards after the forwards again out rucked B&B, giving scrum half Roberts quick ball to his No8. Clarke added the conversion. Quine scored his second try near half time when the forwards drove B&B back and quick passes through the backs found Quine unmarked with an easy try, with Clarke adding the conversion. Playing up the slope Rugby had some defending to do as B&B kept them pinned in their 22 for long periods. Machon, Dixon and Wagstaff all putting in crunching tackles to keep B&B from scoring. The Lions finally managed to break out from defence and secured the win when Wagstaff broke from a line out and on his 10m line, popped to Clarke who drifted past 2 defenders and found Wagstaff again on his inside shoulder for the try. Clarke failed with the conversion. A good team performance with special mention to Mickey, Raj, Scott who contributed much to the game.

Rugby Lions U13s - 19 points    v          Derby RFC U13s - 7 points

Rugby made the long journey to Derby on a bright, sunny day and played one of their best games of the season so far.  Derby Tigers are a quality outfit with a massive squad and although they were short of a couple of their regular players, so were Rugby and two evenly matched teams fought out a highly competitive fixture that provided great entertainment for the travelling support.  Rugby always had the critical edge however and Man of the Match Sean Smith scored two great long distance tries (the second off a great flip pass from stand-in fly half Kyle Webster) before Derby fought back with a fine try of their own.  A period of end to end football then ensued before Rugby broke out of defense for Sean Smith to sprint the length of the field and beat 5 defenders to score the try of the day.  Rugby’s captain Daniel Martin capped a fine individual performance by converting 2 of their 3 tries but in truth the whole squad played out of their skins and every player displayed a surfeit of the traditional values of strength, skill and courage.

Rugby Lions U13s - 0 points           v       Derby RFC U13s - 18 points

The two sides played out a second, shorter match but Rugby, hit badly by player unavailability, had a shortage of fresh players whereas Derby seemed to have an almost endless supply of quality players.  Rugby’s tiring legs could not prevent three unconverted tries and a penalty goal from in front of the posts but their collective heads did not drop and Ryan Masters, Jack Hawkins and Jack Webb worked particularly hard to take the fight to Derby. Once again the whole team can be proud of their efforts and there is strong evidence that Rugby are developing week by week into a seriously powerful squad - they revel in the competition offered by such quality opposition as Derby Tigers.

Rugby Lions Mini-Junior Match Reports

Rugby Lions U8s v Lichfield & Kenilworth - 03-02-2008

Match 1: Rugby Lions U8s v Lichfield

Lost 4:6

Lichfield always present a strong team, and as is often the case this produced some really fine play from our young players. The match was closer than was evidenced by the score with Lions in the lead three times before Lichfield finally nailed their victory with two tries in the final two minutes. Lions took the lead with the first try of the game from Ben Downing. Lichfield responded with a clean run through a somewhat bemused Lions defensive line ending in their first try of the game. Lions had the ball, but strong defending from the opposition turned play after 7 tags and before you could say Six Nations, Lichfield were ahead 2:1. Hopes were high for an equaliser, but the team fumbled and the ball was knocked on. Would this be the opportunity Lichfield needed to extend their lead? Relief all round as Lions intercepted a Lichfield pass and Louis Mitchell made for the touch line passing at just the right time to let Oliver Goodsir to make it two all. Lions went back into the lead with try number three from Sam Wright set up by a strong run from Tom Partridge. Lichfield quickly used their pass back to equalise and then pull ahead with their fourth. Tom Partridge produced some spectacular tagging in an attempt to prevent both these tries. Lions drew level again with try number four from Callum Hopkin, but a loss of focus in defence allowed Lichfield to sneak ahead by two tries just before the final whistle.

Match 2: Rugby Lions U8s v Kenilworth

Won 5:4

Losing the first match of the morning is never a good start for team spirits and this was no exception. In deed, it all became distinctly nail biting when Kenilworth won the toss and whistled through with a first try without so much as a by your leave! Now the last time Lions played Kenilworth, back in January, our fine team won two out of the three games, so a defeat to them now would be very disheartening. Well, we should not have worried. That first try from Kenilworth acted like a tin of Popeye’s finest spinach and Lions roared in with three tries in quick succession thanks to Ben Downing and two from Sam Wright. The team was producing fantastic passing and very positive attacking play, in particular from Sophie Harris. Lions were deservedly leading 3:1 at half time, and although Kenilworth managed a further three tries in the second half, Lions dominated the game and deserved the win secured by two final tries from Tom Partridge who showed his usual explosive speed.

Match 3: Rugby Lions v Lichfield

Drew 5:5

Lichfield – the re-match! As you will see from the score, this was a close match with Lichfield equalising seconds before the final whistle. Lions showed great form with intelligent passing, in particular from Elliott Marshall, Aidan Wardle and Callum Hopkin. The attacking play was the most assertive of the morning, and this kept Lichfield on their toes. Well done to Lions for a solid draw against a strong opposition.

Try scorers were: Callum Hopkin; Vinnie Deery; Sam Wright (2); Tom Partridge

Sam Davies was awarded most improved player of the month and Callum Hopkin was awarded player of the month. Well done to both.

Rugby Lions U9s v Harbury 17-02-08

First game : Rugby Lions won 2 - 0.

In the first encounter Lions were quickest in every department. Straight from the kickoff Jamie Carwardine picked up a loose ball and sprinted forward. Jacob Hardy-King took up the challenge and sprinted for the line only to be stopped short of the line.

Before Harbury could gain any momentum Findlay Williamson and Oran Aske- Haley put in some shuddering tackles to stop the home side making any progress.

This galvanised the Lions through Jordi Pocknell who made some storming runs to set up Matty Tildesley and Caitlin Revan. Matty Tildesley rushed over to open the scoring.

Harry Cash sprayed the ball from the base of the scrum to set Ran Scott, Jamie Carwardine, Jordi Pocknell and Jacob Hardy-King off on runs. The constant pressure finally produced a try for Jamie at the end of the game as he took an inch perfect pass from Oran Aske-Haley.

Second game : Rugby Lions lost 0 - 3.

Harbury came back with a vengeance and overwhelmed the Development side as they scored from the kickoff at the midpoint and with the last play of the game.

All Lions players showed their prowess at tackling as they attempted to stop the resolute home side. Oliver Lee led the way with a crunching tackle on the opponent's biggest player. Jack Cave, Reece Owens and Callum Goodall followed with some good tackling in an attempt to stop the determined side who were now rallied by their supporters.

Zak Wright, Dominic and Kieran Lorimer made mazy runs but could not get the final pass away to set up any further attacks. Robert Jupp tried the direct approach but was smothered by Harburys defence. An inventive play from Zak Wright saw him take the opposition's own lineout ball, but after a great run from Kieran Lorimer he was bundled into touch.

Although the Lions did not trouble the scorer they never gave up.

Reece Owens was awarded Man of the Match.

Rugby Lions U13s - 34 points v Syston RFC U13s - 0 points

Thankfully this match was not cancelled because of the frosty weather and Rugby put in yet another disciplined performance to beat Syston in perfect match day conditions.  The first quarter was played out between the 22’s whilst the teams sized each other up but Rugby struck first when Sean Smith took an exquisite inside pass from Kiron Phillips in a pre-rehearsed move and sprinted through the gap to score under the posts.  Rugby’s forwards and backs were now on top form and the half finished with Stitch Loydall scoring wide out from his own chip ahead.

The second half also belonged to Rugby as they warmed to their task and Tom Swindell sprinted half the length of the field but could not ground the ball properly - never mind, Will Tuite-Dalton picked up from the resulting scrum and drove over anyway.  Rugby were now in control and James Scott scored twice from the wing, the first following brilliant interplay with Kiron Phillips and an outrageous dummy and the second due to his sheer explosive pace.  Alex Andersen-Doig finished things off with a final try as he drove over from a penalty 10 yards out.  Harry Parsons converted 2 of the 6 tries and hit a post with the final kick of the match.

Rugby Lions U13s - 5 points v Syston RFC U13s - 0 points

Another close affair was played out between two evenly matched teams but Rugby’s impressive strength in depth was sufficient to see them home.  Syston forced the pace and their larger forwards made life difficult for the Junior Lions but they rallied to win enough ball to provide James Scott with an opportunity to score the match winning try half way out.

The second half belonged almost exclusively to Syston as they pressed hard for the equalising try but even though they crossed the line on three separate occasions Rich Bannister (welcomed back after several weeks out with injury), Ryan Masters, Jack Hawkins and James Scott put their bodies on the line to prevent what would otherwise have been certain tries. Rugby’s uncompromising defence eventually won them this game and this determination not to surrender was even acknowledged by their opponents, albeit begrudgingly.

James Scott was unanimously voted ‘Man of the Match’ for his top performance in both matches.

Rugby Lions U14s 26 points v Towcester U14s 24 points – 10-02-08

Tries from Scott (2) , Mackenzie & Williams. Clarke kicked 3 conversions.

Rugby Lions U14s 5 points v Northampton Old Scouts U14s 31 points – 17-02-08

The Lions came up against a well drilled NOS side. Going down 24 points to nil in the first 20 minutes proved too much of an up hill task for rugby. Missed tackles around the pitch costs the lions dear as NOS always seemed to be that much quicker in speed and reactions to the ball. Their well drilled forwards and backs always seemed to have more time on the ball than Rugby. To their credit the Lions did pull 1 try back through Jake Wagstaff after some great effort from the Lions forwards. The second half was a bit more even as rugby contained NOS for long periods but offered very little in attack. Notable performances from Robert Mackenzie were the only highlight of the morning. More work needs to be done on tackling and defence.

Loughborough U13s - 12 pts v Rugby Lions U13s- 32 pts

Loughborough started fiercely with a strong wind at their backs and soon turned a sustained period of pressure into their first try. Slowly but surely Lions forwards took the fight back to the hosts and as more possession came their way Rugby's halfbacks Tom Swindell and Harry Parsons were able to get the ball wide which resulted in Sean Smith going over twice with Kiron Phillips converting one of the tries.  Just before half time Loughborough drove over from close range to level the game.

With the wind on their backs Rugby wasted no time and put up some high balls to test out the hosts defence. With the pressure almost continuous it wasn't long before Zak Baldwin, Alex Doig and Johnny Ure helped themselves to a try apiece. Ben Warman was immense in the back row and drove at Loughborough's midfield at every opportunity, creating valuable space out wide which Tom Swindell exploited for the final try of the game. Stitch Lloydall was unlucky not to finish with a try in the corner for the last play of the game, Ben Warman was a deserved man of the match and James Saunders deserves a mention for some excellent work in the set pieces. As usual every player was a credit to the club.

Rugby Lions U9s v Keresley. Played 3 Won 3.

Game 1. Won 2 - 0

Lions started as they meant to go on in this pulsating game.

The first Keresley attack was snuffed out by a try saving tackle from Findlay Williamson. This released Matty Tildsley who sprinted out of defence to make valuable yards.

After camping in the Keresley half for several minutes Matty took a pass from Jack Cave and strode over the line to open the scoring.

From the restart Lions pushed forward and Kieran Lorimer made a jinking run to set up Oran Aske-Haley who was stopped short of the line. Kereley then made some yardage through their forwards only for Jack Cave to strip the ball away from them in a maul.

After some pressure Keresley were making yardage until a crunching tackle from Oliver Lee stopped their momentum.

In the second half it was similar play from the Lions which allowed Oran Aske Haley to make a surging run and score a try.

Game 2. Won 3 - 0.

Lions signalled their intent as Jordi Pocknell scored straight from the kickoff.

Jamie Carwardine made a good run and a good pass which allowed Ran Scott to sidestep the defence and cross the line.

In defence Jack Cave and Caitlin Revan made some crunching tackles to prevent Keresley from getting close to the line.

In the second half Jordi Pocknell stripped the ball from Keresley and fed his back line to again march up field. Caitlin Revan finished the move as she powered over the line.

Jamie Carwardine and Zak Wright made good runs but could not improve the score.

Excellent defence from the whole team made sure that Keresley did not have any consolation.

Game 3. Won 2 - 0.

In a stop start game Lions again held the upperhand throughout.

Ran Scott and Matty Tildesley had a neat interplay between them to set up Jordi Pocknell who made a diagonal run to score in the corner.

Matty Tildesley made a solo run but was pushed into touch just inches from the line. From the line out Ran Scott ripped the ball out and headed for the line to score a great opportunist try.

Dominic Deery, Ran Scott and Jordi Pocknell all made some cracking tackles to prevent Keresley gaining any momentum.

Zak Wright made his zig- zag runs but could not breach the line. Ran Scott followed up but unselfishly was always looking for the pass to put his team mates in for a try.

Man of the Match – Findlay Williamson

Rugby Lions U11s – 19 points v Kerseley - 5 points

The 1st half began with a barrage of pressure from the Keresley pack which was only held at bay by some tough defending by the Lions pack. Some great tackling by Thomas Price and some great rucking by Kezia Bull & Jack "show me your knuckles" Worrall-Soper kept Keresley from going over the try line on numerous occasions. A superbly kicked clearance, by Thomas Price, suddenly released the pressure and the Lions managed to turn the screw on Keresley. After a phase of attacking play by Lions Thomas Price went over for a well deserved try which was then converted by Aaron Martin. Lions continued to put pressure on but failed to breakthrough again before halftime.

The second half began with some great attacking pressure by Lions , which saw some great driving by the Lions pack. This phase of play was finally rewarded when Thomas Price went over in the corner for his second try, converted by Jack Swift. The game then ebbed and flowed in the middle of the pitch with a good display of attack and defence by both teams, which eventually resulted in Keresley breaking through to score. The Lions responded with another period of attacking play, with some good running by winger Jack Swift. Lions were rewarded with another try with the last play of the game, this time Aaron Martin going over.

Squad: Aaron Martin, Jason Moyse, "Jack "show me your knuckles" Worrall-Soper, Jack Swift, Lucas Gregory, Lewis Arbuthnott, Joe Cullum, Rachael Scott, Kezia Bull, Hugh Deery, Oliver Beight, Connor Joliffe-Grimes and man of the match Thomas Price.

23/02/08 Loughborough U14s - 39 points v Rugby Lions U14s 10 points

Missing several first choice players due to injury, holidays and SoR, the Lions did well to contain a big Loughborough side. The lions scored their tries through "G" Matthews and Lewis Quine. Considering their opposition the Lions Development players can come away from this game with much credit.

02/03/08 Shipston on Stour U14s - 10 points v Rugby Lions U14s – 24 points

Playing against the elements in the first half , the Lions started the better of the 2 teams. With a strong wind in their faces Rugby opted to run everything rather than kick , but one pass two many went astray and Shipston pounced on the loose pass allowing their quick winger to score in the corner. Rugby responded in style when the forwards worked the ball up the field for "G" Matthews in support of Jake Wagstaff to level the score. The Lions took the lead soon afterwards when captain Harry Ellis took a pass from Matt Gatley on their own 22, Ellis then brushed off the next Shipston tackler with a text book hand off , with only the full back to beat he showed him the outside and stepped back in field completely wrong footing the defender to score under the posts. Tom Dixon added the conversion.
The 2nd half started well for Shipstom when some sloppy handling at the line out allowed them to come straight through and score from long range. Rugby pulled further away when "G" Matthews scored from close range after some great pop passes off the floor from Robert Mackenzie and Jake Wagstaff keeping the ball alive for Matthews. George Williams sealed the Lions win when the backs moved the ball quickly from 3rd phase possession with Gatley and Ed Scott linking well for Williams to score in the corner. Dylan Roberts added the conversion. Considering the changes to the team everyone contributed to a very entertaining game of rugby.

09/03/08

Rugby Lions U9s v Alcester U9s

Game 1: Lions on the attack from the off with a strong run from Jordi Pocknell. Try by Matty Tildesley. Lions direct running created problems for Alcester, camped on the try line for most of the game. Tricky Ran Scott darted through static defence for the second Lions try. Captain Caitlin Revan made a thundering run giving Ran Scott his second try and the Lions third. Lions continue to dominate with smothering defensive play. Robert Jupp came on as sub and served to bolster the side still pressing on Alcester line. The result was a quick run and try by Jordi Pocknell on the whistle. Final score Lions 4 – Alcester 0.

Game 2: Lions play a different squad for the second game, making it a more even contest. Oran Aske-Haley offering a potent attacking option till subbed. Zak Wright worked hard to win the ball in a committed game. Lions experience begins to tell and Jack Cave defending bravely creates opportunity for Ran Scott, but Alcester thwart the chance. A flurry of subs for Lions disrupts concentration letting the home team in for a score despite attacking from Reece Owens. A brilliant burst from Jamie Carwardine gives Matty Tildesley opportunity, but he just failed to score. From ensuing play Caitlin runs half the pitch length to level the score. From the restart a mazy run from Zak Wright puts Lions back on the offensive to give Lions a strong finish to the game. A good team effort from all involved. Score: Lions 1 - Alcester 1.

Game 3: More rotation gives the starting line-up a new look and they make a strong start from the off. Lions are on the offensive. Two quick tries from Matty Tildesley and Jordi Pocknell, but both were disallowed. Lions hard work kept them camped in Alcester’s half, with constant probing in the attack. Eventually leading to Ran Scott forcing over for the score. Alcester broke quickly from the restart but the effort was snuffed out my Findlay Williamson and almost immediately Caitlin Revan powered through for a good score. With their tails up the Lions took the game by the scruff of the neck and really opened up giving Ran Scott his second of the game. Quickly followed by Jordi Pocknell’s score giving the Lions their third. Despite the difficulty of the task Alcester battled gamely but for little reward and Rugby’s power and aggression led to two further tries before the whistle. A good team effort with several outstanding performances.

Man of the Match – Robert Jupp

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Rugby Lions U13s - 17 points  v  Coalville RFC U13s - 5 points

Lions worked extremely hard against larger opponents on a fine day for Rugby.  Coalville’s game plan was obvious from the start as they looked to bully their way up field but Lions were having none of it as they competed equally and were unlucky not to take an early lead.  Jonny Ure was particularly unfortunate as he sprinted clear only to be pulled back for an unnecessarily forward pass.  As the half wore on, too much kicking and Coalville’s burgeoning tactics reaped some reward as they scored a muscular try wide out.  The second half started with a bang as Lion’s more skillful backs worked the ball wide for Sean Smith to cross for 2 trademark tries and James Scott to replicate the feat with a great ‘show and go’ from half way.  Harry Parsons converted one of the tries to complete an unassailable lead.  Coalville worked hard to get back but their fleeting hopes were snuffed out as Lion’s impressive defense held out and on the one occasion that they did break free Sean Smith tore across to make a great covering tackle.  Under pressure from Ryan Masters Will Tuite-Dalton was voted ‘Man of the Match’ and Robert Chan ‘Player of the Month’ for February.

16/03/08

Rugby Lions U14s 7 v 0 Lutterworth U14s

The score line suggests a very close competitive game. Neither team were able to break each other down as the pitch and weather conditions dictated a forwards battle. The Lions contained Lutterworth who were winning of the 50/50 battles in the rucks but could not get through a stout Rugby defence. The first 20 minutes were fairly even with Lutterworth just shading possession of the ball. Just before half time the Lions turned over a Lutterworth ruck and Captain Harry Ellis sprinted from 40 metres out to score under the posts. Clarke added the conversion.
The 2nd half saw the Lions under pressure as Lutterworth looked to draw level but for some stout defence from Findley, Scott, Wagstaff, Mackenzie and Williams. In fact the 15 Lions players tackled out their skins as they stifled every Lutterworth attack. The last 5 minutes saw Lutterworth camped in the Lions 22 as the Lions gave away of silly penalties. To be fair the Lions did look dangerous when they counter attacked themselves with great runs from Mackenzie and Wagstaff. The final whistle came and a great cheer from the Lions players.

A 2nd development game was played which Lutterworth won 15 - 5. Sam Plimmer grabbing the Lions only try. Again a very keenly contested game of rugby by both teams. All in all a successful day for the Lions as they showed that they can defend and counter attack with pace and power. MoM must again to Oliver Machon whose work rate in the loose was outstanding and who put his body on the line on more than one occasion. Well done to all 26 players.

30/03/08

Rugby Lions U9s v Berkswell & Balsall U9’s

Game 1 - Lions 3 Berkswell & Balsall 3: Jamie Carwardine scores straight from the kick off with a great mazy run. With some great rucking over Lions were unlucky to concede an equalising try. Findley Williamson was having a great game at full back and made some very good try saving tackles, with Berkswell mauling over the try line they went in for there second but just before the half time whistle Lions turned over the ball with some great rucking from Zak Wright, Matty Tildesley and Kieran Lorimer. Jamie Carwardine picked up a loose ball from that ruck and went over for his second try. Berkswell and Balsall tried running through the Lions from the kick off but they were stopped in their tracks by some big tackles from Kieran Lorimer, Jack Cave And Ben Clayton. But with some good passing from Berkswell and Balsall they were able to go over for their 3rd try of the game. With not much time left on the clock Findley Williamson picked up the ball and ran most of the pitch to just get stopped short of the line but with some great support play from Jack Cave, the ball was off loaded to him and he went over for the Lions 3rd and Final try. A special mention to Dominic Wilkins who played for Berkswell and Balsall instead of his own team the Lions.

Game 2 - Lions 2 Berkswell and Balsall 3: The second game started with some bone crunching tackles from Findley Williamson. With only 5 minutes played in the first half Lions found themselves 2 try’s down. With some good rucking from Dominic Wilkins who was back playing for the Lions and Jamie Carwardine, The Lions were able to push forward up the pitch. Dominic Deery playing scrum half picked the ball up from the ruck and passed it out to Matty Tildesley who was stopped just short of the line when he was driven into touch. With the half time whistle blown Lions found themselves down by 2.

The second half started and from an attacking scrum Dominic Deery Passed the ball out to Zak Wright who then ran through some tackles to off load the ball to Matty Tildesley who went over for Lions first try. Jack Cave was ripping the ball out at every opportunity but with some good passing by Berkswell And Balsall the Lions found themselves on there own try line with Berkswell and Balsall crashing over for there third of the game. A big tackle from Kieran Lorimer which resulted in a turn over ball in Lions favour, Matty Tildesley ran the length of the pitch to score a fantastic try. With the last phase of play called Lions turned over the ball and Jamie Carwardine went on a mazy run and was stopped just short of the line.

A special mention to Ben Clayton who played for Berkswell and Balsall instead of his own team the Lions.

Man of the Match Jamie Carwardine.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Oakham U14s 29 v 27 Rugby Lions U14s

The Lions made the long trek to Oakham rear Rutland water but came away with a narrow defeat. Rugby started the stronger using their quicker backs to keep Oakham under pressure. Rugby scored from their 1st attack when the forwards won quick ruck ball which was moved wide through the backs for Winger Liam Hobson to score. Dixon added the conversion. Fly Half Ellis scored soon afterwards when he weaved his way through a weak defence. From then on the Lions went to sleep and allowed Oakham to force their way back into the game with 2 tries in quick succession. Giving them a 14-12 lead at half time. With a slight wind at their back the Lions ran everything at Oakham which gave the Lions another try through Matthews at No8. Oakham scored again soon afterwards after the Lions made basic errors in defence trying to run the ball under their own posts. Oakham scored again with their bigger mobile forwards leaving Rugby to find 2 scores to win. The Lions responded when Hobson scored his 2nd try. The last couple of minutes found Rugby searching for the winning score which had eluded them. Considering the Lions only had the bare 15 fit players , 6 of which are "dev" players this was a very good performance, but much more work needs to be done in rucking and support play as the Lions were turned over to easily in the contact area , denying the Lions backs quick ball which would have had a significant effect on the outcome of this game.

Rugby Lions U8s v St Andrews U8s

Match One 7:6 - St Andrews won the toss and romped down the field to take the first try, however it was disallowed for travelling. Play passed to Lions, but St Andrews defended very strongly and play passed on seven tags. St Andrews capitalised on this and scored their first try. The teams jostled to dominate early in the game and tight refereeing saw play pass repeatedly between the two. Lions drew level after a daring run by Jack Wooliscroft. St Andrews responded immediately with a second try closely followed by a disallowed third. Jack Wooliscroft equalised again, supported by strong passing from Elliott Marshall and Sam Wright. St Andrews managed two further tries by half time and had a number disallowed. 4:2 down at half time, the tension in the Lions camp was palpable. The second half saw a gritty determination to claw back the game. Lions produced some strong attacking advances, thoughtful positioning and accurate passing. Callum Hopkin and Oliver Goodsir made good ground, passing neatly to Tom Partridge for try number three. Try four followed quickly after an explosive run by Tom Partridge. Lions put the pressure on St Andrews who had dominated the first half. Louis Mitchell charged daringly for the St Andrews defence line and nearly made it through, passing neatly, allowing Aidan Wardle to score. The score was six all seconds before the final whistle thanks to Jack Wooliscroft. St Andrews lost play in the dying moments of the game and Lions went in for the kill. Jack Wooliscroft broke the defence and Callum Hopkin placed the winning ball.

Match Two: 5:4 - Buoyed by the earlier win, Lions pressured St Andrews with close attempts from Vinnie Deery and Callum Hopkin. Frustratingly St Andrews nipped in with the first try of the match. Undeterred, Sophie Harris scattered the St Andrews defence to equalise. Play remained neck and neck: 2 all at half time (Callum Hopkin) and 3 all as soon as play recommenced (Tom Partridge). Both teams were pushing hard to get ahead. Lions showed brilliant defending taking play from St Andrews just feet from the try line. Elliot Marshall whistled up the right wing, passing to John Turland for try number four. Tom Partridge sealed the victory with his second try of the match.

Well done to the whole squad for two well played games.

Rugby Lions U9s 5 v 0 St Andrews U9s

The Rugby Lions were on great form from the first whistle in this game with some great rucking from Reece Owens and Jack Cave. With Dominic Deery playing scrum half he picked the ball up from the bottom of the ruck and off loaded the ball to Ran Scott who made some yardage before making a little pop pass to Findley Williamson to score a well deserved early try. Rugby Lions piled on the pressure and with a great determined run from Jordi Pocknell he passed the ball out to Oran Aske-Haley to go over for the try. With Jordi Pocknell And Oran Aske-Haley Combining again the 3rd try was scored. A great run down the wing by Jamie Carwardine who passed the ball out to the waiting Jack Cave who was just driven out before the try line. Matty Tildsley Ripped the ball out from a tackle he made, then with a great mazy run he sprinted through for a well deserved solo try. The ref called half time and the coaches made some changes with Caitlen Revan, Robert Jupp and Ben Clayton coming on for Jamie Carwardine, Jack Cave and Reece Owens. Rugby Lions started the half exactly how they finished the first with some very determined running from Jordi Pocknell he made the yards with Ben Clayton and Caitlen Revan rucking at every opportunity and clearing the way for Oran Aske-Haley to go over for a well deserved hat trick and Rugby Lions Only try of the 2nd Half. Robert Jupp came out of nowhere from the ruck with a very strong run and crashed over the line but unfortunately had his try disallowed.

A special mention to Zac Wright and Kerion Lorimer who played for St Andrews.

Rugby Lions U9s 0 - 2 St Andrews U9s

This game saw a totally different St Andrews team who came out and took the game by the scruff of the neck and took the game to the Rugby Lions. Findley Williamson was playing a great game at full back with some try saving tackles. Jamie Carwardine came close to a try but was just stopped short of the try line. Caitlen Revan, Robert Jupp and Ben Clayton were holding their own in the rucks that were being formed by St Andrews, Jack cave and Reece Owens were making some great supporting runs from the wings but the passes were just coming short. With the ref calling last play of the half St Andrews was awarded a penalty try for a high tackle just before the line.

The Second half started with the Rugby Lions taking the re start Jack Cave and Jamie Carwardine decided to go for a switch move which worked perfectly for the off load to Zak Wright who got stopped in his tracks from a crunching tackle. Kieron Lorimer went on a little mazy run but was also stopped short by a determined St Andrews team who went on to add a 2nd a final try of the game.

A special mention to Jordi Pocknell and Oran Aske-Haley who played for St Andrews.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Rugby Lions U10s v St Andrews U10s - Sunday saw two great matches between these local rivals. On this occasion Lions just shaded it, winning the second game by the narrowest of margins after drawing the first.

In the first match, Lions dominated the set pieces as well as the rucks. Oliver O'Connor made the line out his own and James Stewart was always on hand to keep the ball moving. William Davis skilfully directed operations in the engine room and Lewis Bloxham was his usual combatitive and ferocious self. Lions ran in four tries from Liam Wardle, Tom Docherty, Ross Smillie and Ed Hands. However, despite being on top Lions had trouble coping with the fast St Andrew's wingers and the match ended 4:4.

In the second game Lions rolled up there sleeves, continued to dominate play and cut out the still dangerous St A's wingers. With tries from Liam Wardle and Tom Docherty, Lions finished 2:1 winners.

Thanks to both teams for two great games (Lions Wednesday training is paying dividends) and thanks to St Andrew's for sportingly lending Lions a player

Rugby Lions U11s 21 v St Andrews U11s 14

Lions got off to a fairly good start in this local derby match, putting the St’s under a lot of pressure and were unlucky not to score a couple of early tries, Jordan and Tom coming very close. Some great play by the forwards, Kalib & Kezia in particular. An injury to the relentless Jason seemed to unsettle the Lions for a short while and this allowed the St’s to come back into the game, only some desperate defending, with some great tackling by Lucas and Swifty kept them from scoring. Somehow the sides managed to get to half time without any points on the board. The second half started with Lions on the front foot again, Jason returning to the fray bolstered the Lions in the middle. Following some great driving by the Lions pack, a crunching tackle by Lewis forced a mistake by the St’s and from the following scrum, Kaeden slipped the ball to Aaron who danced over the line to score which he then converted. St’s then regrouped and came back at Lions managing to force there way through the Lions and go over to score in the corner. With gritted teeth the Lions came again and after coming under some pressure managed to kick the ball clear and Jordan managed to chase the ball down to score, he then converted. A passage of sloppy play by Lions followed which allowed St’s to come back again and after knocking the ball out of Lions hands scored a second converted try. Lions then had to hang on for dear life when put under pressure by St’s as the game went backwards & forwards. Some great driving by Kezia and some gritty tackling by Rachael helped keep St’s at bay. Then The ball broke for St’s winger to run at the Lions backs but a superb crunching tackle by Swifty managed to stop a certain try. The Lions pack then got hold of the ball and managed to bully their way to the other end of the pitch and with the last play of the game Kezia drove her way over to score. Swifty then converted to round up a great performance by Lions. A special word of praise to Olly who had to play for the St’s and put in a valiant performance.

Squad: Thomas Price, Jack Swift, Jack Worrall-Soper, Jason Moyse, Rachael Scott, Kaeden O’Neill, Oliver Beight, Connor Jolliffe-Grimes, Hugh Deery, Lucas Gregory, Jordan MacDonald, Aaron Martin, Kalib Townsend, Lewis Arbuthnott and Player of the match Kezia Bull.

Rugby Lions U13’s 46 pts v Northampton BBOB’s 0 pts

After 3 weeks enforced inactivity Rugby warmed up with a training game before relieving their pent-up frustration on BBOB’s.  Lions were in fine form, tackling like demons and running with smooth efficiency, their only weakness being a tendency to cut back in midfield when their wingers looked to be match winners.  BBOB’s large forwards looked dangerous but Lions queued up to make their tackles and Sean Smith, always looking dangerous, scored a fine opening try.  This was followed by tries from Daniel Martin (following great support play) and a most popular effort by Grant Northcott.  Kiron Phillips struck two conversions for a 19 – 0 half time lead.  Both teams changed players to utilize their squads but the match maintained the same pattern as Lions superior speed and invention allied to muscular forward play bought a hat-trick of tries for Jonny Ure and a ‘bullocking’ try for Ben Bramley.  James Scott scored a final trademark try and Kiron Phillips who captained the side well throughout, kicked one conversion to complete the scoring.  Lion’s general play was a pleasure to watch but their support play is improving and their offload in the tackle truly excellent.  Jonny Ure was voted player of the month based on this match and his training performances and Kyle Webster man of the match.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Rugby Lions U14s 10 v 14 Bishop Stortford U14s

The game was split into 3 x 20 minute sessions to allow all players a game. Rugby started slowly as they struggled to maintain any possession of the ball. B&S covered the ground well not allowing the Lions backs any space. The deadlock was finally when Rugby took a quick tap penalty moving the ball wide to Gatley to score in the corner. Clarke failed with the conversion.

The 2nd session saw several changes to the team. Players of note were Jay Wyatt and Micky Halewood who tackled well. Bishop Stortford however scored 2 converted tries after sustained pressure.

The final 20 minute session gave the Lions the upper hand again and they put points on the board when Greg Matthews scored from close range. Hobson failed with the conversion. With the clock ticking down the Lions camped on the BS line but could not break down a well organised defence.

The Lions could and should have played a lot better, but lacked that self belief at crucial times in the game.

Dudley Kingswinford U15s 26 vs Rugby Lions U15s 29. Sunday 13th April 2008

Thirteen Lions, heavily depleted by injuries and absentees, conjure one of the best performances of the season undoing a strong Kings side.

However it must be said without Kings sporting nature and fairness the game would not have happened at all. Credit should also go to the referee who was absolutely outstanding – such a pleasure to see.

The game was a spectator’s delight with all elements of the sport being showed. Running open rugby followed by close driving rugby. Excellent inter play between backs and forwards had the match played from one end of the field to the other. Rugby just coming out on top after tries from James, Ben(3) and Sam, conversation through Greg.

There are times when the squad makes the coaches very proud, this was one of them. A huge performance played with real pride particularly when the legs were shot in the last ten minutes.

A real credit to the club, with a man of the match performance from Greg Loydall who typified the efforts of the squad.

Rugby Lions U13s at Barkers Butts RFC Tournament

Rugby Lions U/13’s 5 pts v Barkers Butts’s U/13’s 0 pts

Rugby took a powerful squad and approached the tournament with real confidence but an improving Barkers proved to be a stern test in the first match.  Barkers large forwards and competitive backs disrupted Lions and although they took a fair share of ball the Lions were pressurized into uncharacteristic handling errors and it was a relief to all when the Lions finally put together one of their usual high quality handling moves and James Scott finished well for the match winning try.

Rugby Lions U/13’s 0 pts v Nuneaton U/12’s 10 pts

Both sets of coaches had earmarked this match as likely to be decisive in providing the tournament winners and so it proved to be.  Nuneaton have an extremely impressive pack and although their backs do not possess Rugby’s blistering pace they are competent without being flashy.  Rugby competed well throughout but as the rain came down they just could not work the ball into space and when chances came they failed to finish.  Nuneaton eventually took the match with 2 well worked forward tries.

Rugby Lions U/13’s 10 pts v Birmingham Solihull U/13’s 0 pts

Rugby had a point to prove after their loss to local rivals Nuneaton and set about Birmingham Solihull with relish.  For most of the first half Rugby were on top and Zac Baldwin scorched over the pitch to outpace defenders on an outward curve and dive over theatrically for the opening score.  The second half followed a similar pattern and although Birmingham had their moments it was no surprise when James Scott finished a flowing move involving forwards and backs for a high quality try.  Unfortunately Lions were just pipped by one point in the Tournament league but second place is not bad and along the way Lions learned several valuable lessons on how to play against forward orientated teams.
