Rugby Lions U8s Round Robin with Old
Northamptonians and Wellingborough25/11/2007
Rugby Lions v Wellingborough 7:5
Lions were the stronger team from the start and were ahead 5:3 by
half time. Aidan Wardle provided two blistering tries in quick
succession and Sam Wright was also on particularly fine form finishing
two tries, but also keeping the attacking momentum going throughout the
match. Wellingborough had many opportunities, but Lions kept up the
defensive pressure with particularly strong tagging from William
Gregory, James Smith, Tom Partridge and Oliver Goodsir. Lions maintained
their lead in the second half and showed some fine team work including
switch moves from Elliot Marshall and Vinnie Deery and William Gregory
and Tom Partridge. Well done Lions on a deserved win.
Try scorers were: Aidan Wardle – 2 ; Tom Partridge – 1; Sam Wright –
2; Oliver Goodsir – 2
Rugby Lions v Old Northamptonians 4:5
Lions won the toss and William Gregory scored the first try of this
high stakes game. ONs responded immediately with a run that was like a
warm knife through butter…..and so the tone of the match was set. A
piece of great play from one team was immediately rebutted by an equally
great piece of play from the other! Sam Wright scored try number two
after an equally buttery run, only for ONs to equalise immediately. ONs
try number three was delayed until after half time thanks to Elliot
Marshall’s fantastic pre-whistle tag. The second half continued with the
evenly matched teams battling to edge ahead. ONs made it three, and
Aidan Wardle equalized. ONs managed to sneak to five. Tom Partridge
provided a fourth try, but time had run out for Lions and the final
whistle blew on what had been an exciting and nail biting match.
Thank you to all the players and coaches for turning out to play.
Another weeks Oscar winners, but this weeks best supporting players were
Louis Mitchell, Sophie Harris, Freddy Ogilvy and John Turland.

Rugby Lions U13s Development - 5 pts v Peterborough U13s Development
- 27 pts
Rugby fielded a strong development XV and dominated the first half
for Jonny Ure to score first in the corner. Unfortunately
Peterborough returned the compliment straight from the kick off and the
teams turned round all square. Peterborough strengthened their
team during the break and with the wind at their backs their larger
forwards monopolized possession to score a further 4 tries without
reply. Rugby deserve immense credit for the way they performed
against the odds but Ryan Marsh, Tom Reeve, Ben Hyslop. Rory Holmes and
Fraser O’Brien deserve a special mention. Fraser O’Brien was
deservedly voted ‘Man of the Match’.
Rugby Lions U13s - 26 points v Peterborough
U13s - 0 points
Rugby’s unbeaten record was riding on this one and they tore into
Peterborough with relish. Playing controlled Rugby football the
Lions took a deserved lead when Zac Baldwin scored and converted his own
try. Peterborough’s defense continued to hold firm until Shaun
Smith took a quick penalty and scorched through before linking with his
support players and on to Alex Andersen-Doig who crashed over for the
try of the match. From the kick off Peterborough kicked direct to
Shaun Smith who immediately outpaced everyone to score under the posts.
Zac Baldwin added the extra points. Rugby played more of the same
after the break and froze Peterborough out – Zac Baldwin scored and
converted his second try of the match but it could have been so much
more if overlaps had not been left begging and players not got a little
greedy. Alex Anderson-Doig was voted ‘Man of the Match’ but
in truth this was a very impressive performance from the whole team.
