Rugby Lions U7s v’s Old Leams

Two games were the order of the day; the first game saw the Lions take an early lead with a well worked try. Old Leams hit back scoring a try of their own, 1 further try from each team before the half time whistle. (H/t 2-2). After the restart good play from the Lions saw them retake the lead, from the restart a fumble from Old Leams saw the Lions go down the other end to score their 4th try. Another try from Old Leams followed by 1 from the Lions and a final try from the visitors saw the game end 5 – 4 to the Lions.

The second game was just as the first with the Lions taking the upper hand. The only difference being this time the Lions were able to win by 6 tries to 4. Both wins come on the back of a good result last week which gave the lads the boost / confidence they needed, well done another excellent display. Try scores were Marcus Tarrant 2, Angus Robinson 2, Solomon Cave 4 and Finn Peacocke 3. With Harry Ogilvie, Jake Jones and Matthew Foxon making excellent contributions. What makes theses 2 wins more special is that the squad is only 7 strong, so any year 2 children wanting to take up rugby then please come along and join in.

Rugby Lions U8s v Old Leams

Lions squad of 14 were eager and the strategy was to play a fresh 7 for each second half, so ensuring everyone had plenty of match play and energy levels were maintained for the tough schedule of 3 matches in just over an hour. Old Leam’s were fielding a strong squad.

Lions won the first match 4:3. A notable match moment was a beautiful switch move by Callum Hopkin and Sam Wright.

Old Leam’s won the second match 5:2. Lions had lost concentration and Old Leam’s made the most of this. The result might have been worse had it not been for some very persistent tagging from Louis Mitchell, Sam Wright and Oliver Goodsir.

There was everything to play for in the final match and Lions roared back with a magnificent 8:5 victory. Old Leam’s said how much they had enjoyed the fixture and particular compliments went to out referee of the day, Andy Downing.

Try scorers were: Ben Downing– 1; Tom Partridge –8 ; Elliott Marshall –1 ; Calum Hopkin –1 ; William Gregory – 2; Louis Mitchell – 1

Well done to Sophie Harris who was awarded player of the month.

Rugby Lions U9s v Old Leams

Lions fielded a squad of 17 players which were both experienced and developing players against Old Leams this Sunday. Three games were played during the course of the morning. The first resulting in a well earned win for the Lions, with Jordi Pocknell scoring a hat trick. The final result 3-1 to Lions.

The second game saw Caitlin Revan showing great strength and determination in her running and in the tackle. Harry Cash managed to score the Lions only try of the game when he was passed the ball from a ruck and flew along the wing before OLs knew the ball was out. However after battling hard the game resulted in a 6-1 loss.

Game on for the last match. Lions were determined to win the deciding game. Each of the 17 strong squad got to play at least half a game. Findlay Williamson was fearless in rucking over, and Matty Tildsley showed everyone how to rip a ball. The Lions first try came from Caitlin Revan, followed by another 2 by Matty Tildsley. It was all change at half time, as the other half of the squad took their position on the field. OLs equalised to bring the score to 3-3, but up stepped Jamie Superman Carwardine who launched himself over the try line to score the winning try. Final result 4-3 to Lions.

Congratualtions to all the U9s: Jordi Pocknell, Findlay Williamson, Noah Slinn, Joul Saunders, Oran Aske-Haley, Matty Tildsley, Jamie Carwardine, Ran Scott, Jacob Hardy-King, Robert Jupp, Harry Cash, Kieran Lorimer, Caitlin Revan, Ben Clayton, Jack Cave, Oliver Lee & Dominic Wilkins

Rugby Lions U13’s - 67 points     v    Old Leamingtonians U13’s - 0 points

Lions maintained their 100% record with an impressive win on Sunday.  Rugby’s forwards competed equally with their larger opponents and through powerful support and strong rucking and mauling ended the game on top.  Once again the three quarters were in fine form running in tries from all over and causing panic in OL’s ranks every time they touched the ball.  Shaun Smith scored 4 tries for the second week in succession and Tom Reeve, Rich Bannister, Tom Swindell, Jonny Ure, Zac Baldwin and Daniel Martin scored 1 each.  Daniel Martin nearly scored a second but was just short and the ref awarded the try to Wil Tuite-Dalton on the follow up.  Zac Baldwin converted 6 of the 11 tries and Ben Warman was deservedly voted Man of the Match.

Rugby Lions U14’s – 55 points v Old Leamingtonians U14’s - 10 points

The Lions won the toss and kicked off from which the Lions forwards got stuck into the OL's. Quick recycled ball from the forwards with Harry Ellis jinking under the posts for the first score. The kick off from OL's was caught by No 8 Wagstaff who broke through 3 tackles to off load to Ed Scott who in turn span the ball wide to the backs, this nearly adding another try but the ball was just knocked on by a lions player before the try line. With pressure from the lions back row OL's were forced to kick possession away which rugby accepted and returned with interest. The wayward kick was caught by fullback Declan George who passed inside to Wagstaff , at the breakdown hooker Machon offloaded to Matthews for the score , again under the posts. Playing fluent rugby, the Lions tried to play an expansive game linking forwards and backs which further tries were scored by Riley, Wagstaff and Matthews. Ringing the changes allowed OL's a score just before half time. Playing up the slope now the Lions ran the ball at every opportunity with tries coming from Wagstaff, Mackenzie, Williams and Matthews. Dylan Roberts drop kicked 4 conversions. All in all not a bad performance against weakened opposition. Harder games will follow from which the Lions will have to ruck more effectively as they tended to be very timid in the contact area.
