Rugby produced their worst performance in many a season at a warm and sunny Priory Lane. They were totally outplayed in every facet of the game by Park who, in total contrast to the visitors, were sharp, committed, organised and incisive. The opening ten minutes was as good as it got for the Lions, and Matt Goode slotted two penalties to give them a 6-0 lead following repeated infringements from the home side. Then it became embarrassingly one-sided with Rugby struggling to get out of their own half. Lion’s midfield defence has looked suspect all season and the home side showed just how vulnerable they can be in this area. Park scored two converted tries and a penalty to give them a comfortable lead at half time and the omens were not good for the visitors. Half Time: - Rosslyn Park 17 Rugby Lions 6 The second half continued Park’s dominance, and Rugby’s inability to retain what little ball they had, was costing them dear. Rugby were so poor, they could not threaten Park’s 22 metre line, let alone the try line. The only question was how many tries the home side were going to rack up, and it was painful watching for the handful of travelling supporters. As bad as Rugby were, credit must go to Rosslyn Park, who played an attractive and effective running game, and looked dangerous whenever they had the ball. (Which was 90% of the time) It is back to the drawing board for Rugby, and much work needs to be done before next Saturday’s game against Canterbury at Webb Ellis Road.

Rosslyn Park Preview So far, so good! With three games chalked up the Lions are all but in third place, which is a considerable improvement on last season’s opening. Not only have we managed to register two victories, but we already have three valuable bonus points as well. If some reports are to be believed the team has not yet really got it together, so that could be the icing on the cake. Rugby Lions have played Rosslyn Park eleven times in the league competition between 1991/92 and 2003/04 at several different levels, including Courage Division 1, which is now the Guinness Premier League. Six games were won, four lost and one was drawn. The last time the two sides met was in February 2004 when Park won 17-19, with an interception try, at Webb Ellis Road in the dying seconds of the game. This season Rosslyn Park have also won two games out of three, but trail Rugby by virtue of the Lions larger bag of bonus points. The Lions defensive work was improved against Richmond, but their penalty count was still too high and the lineout was inconsistent. An improvement in these areas of the game could make all the difference at Priory Park on Saturday. This game will be a tough one but, if the Lions can bring back the points, it will be another necessary step on the way to achieving an important top three place by the season’s end |
