Rugby Lions returned to Webb Ellis Road after five consecutive away trips, but their disappointing results continued. On a warm sunny afternoon, the game was very open, and only the high number of unforced errors restricted the scoring. Lions were first on the scoreboard after five minutes when full back Jack Green touched down following good interplay from Warner, Reed and Hales. Owens converted for a 7-0 lead. Rugby were under pressure early on in the scrums against Chinnor’s much more physical pack, and when Riding was shown a yellow card following an intervention from the assistant referee, the push-over try claimed by number eight Wright looked inevitable. Cathcart converted for the visitors to level the score. Lions were creating plenty of opportunities, but lack of composure and correct decision making, meant that they were unable to regain the advantage .
Half Time: - Rugby Lions 7 Chinnor 7
In the first five minutes of the second half, Rugby had two golden opportunities to put them in the driving seat, but a dropped pass by Reed with the line begging, and a score by Hales being ruled out for a marginal forward pass, increased the home supporter’s frustration. Penalties were exchanged by Owens and Cathcart for a 10-10 score line, before a quick tap penalty on the hour mark from Prescott, gave the visitors the lead. Lions looked to be getting back in contention, until they gifted the visitors the decisive score. Rugby had a scrum on halfway, and the backs all came over to the blind side. Riding picked up at the base and set off on the open side before loosing the ball. With the cover non-existent, Williams ran in unopposed for an easy try. Chinnor then comfortably ran down the clock for a vital win to keep their hopes alive of avoiding relegation. |

Chinnor Preview Rugby Lions return to Webb Ellis Road on Saturday after their six week absence on the road and will be looking to ‘up the ante’ after a series of indifferent performances. Their visitors, Chinnor, will no doubt be in a similar mindset, in their case relegation is the threat and they have no taste for a second relegation following a solitary season in National 3 on the heels of the first. Of the last three games the Lions have to play, this is the one that offers the best chance of a Lions win with a bonus point as well. Ade Hales is still the top scorer for Rugby but he has been spending more time defending of late. It would be nice to have some more videoed tries to watch on the Supporters website. If the Lions can rediscover their form from the turn of the year then they should win. Whatever the result, expect a good afternoon’s entertainment.
