Rugby Lions Under 13s vs Coalville Under 13s 26 Aril 2009 The Under 13s rounded off their season with an impressive win at Coalville last Sunday. The game was a very physical affair with several large players on the Coalville side. Rugby got off to a great start with a try from Jack Taylor 5 minutes into the game when he made a break from the scrum and dodged various tackles to go across the line. However Coalville soon struck back to level the score and were gaining in confidence until Ashley Moore collected the ball well within his own half and managed to offload to Chris Easton who spotted a gap down the wing and sprinted away from the opposition to take the score at half time to 10-5. In the second half Rugby were keen to press home their advantage and soon started building a cushion when Patrick Mills received good ball from Paddy Forde to go on to score 2 fantastic tries by sidestepping the opposition from breaks at the half way line. Coalville managed to get 1 try back and with 15 minutes remaining the score stood at 22-10 to Rugby. In the last quarter Rugby’s better fitness levels started to show and with further tries from Patrick, Charlie Smith, Chris Easton and new-comer Josh Cook the final score finished at 44-10. This was arguably the best match of the season for the lads and with more of a team performance this year than ever before, I am sure the squad will become a major force on the local scene once the new season kicks off.
Rugby Lions U15s Rugby Lions U15s took part in an invitational tournament involving some of the top teams from across the Midlands, plus Otley from Yorkshire. This was a tough tournament to play in on a surface that was baked hard (rather like the conditions the British Lions will face on their forthcoming tour) The Rugby Lions started strongly with a 10 pts to 5 victory over Matlock with tries from Dylan Roberts and Jake Wagstaff. This was followed by a resounding 25pts to nil victory over the Baa Baas in which Jack Tierney scored his first Lions try. This took the Lions into the semi final of the cup competition where they met favourites Wolverhampton. The Lions pack were the dominant force but Wolverhampton had the ascendancy in the backs and were able to run in four tries to send the Lions into a playoff against Market Bosworth. The Lions pack again dominated proceedings but two breakaway tries sent Bosworth clear. However, the Lions fought back with tries from Wagstaff and Greg Matthews to earn a deserved draw. A penalty shootout decided the game and Greg Clarke slotted two great kicks to win the match for the Lions. A good end to the season for the Lions.
