The team knew it would be a tough game with the home side having conceded only 62 points all season from 16 games. The lads got stuck in from the whistle and the new recruits in the Rugby team showed how vital their input will be in the final few games of the season and more importantly when the lads move up an age group. Full back Josh Cook made several important catches and penetrating kicks into the opposition’s half to keep the pressure on. However just before half time Rugby lost concentration for a minute and paid the price when the Lutterworth centre broke through to score the first try. At half time the score was 5-0. In the second half Lutterworth scored 2 soft tries against the lads but Rugby kept to their game plan and were rewarded with a try shortly after when Patrick Mills charged down a kick behind the Lutterworth try line which Daniel Hunter pounced on to score. Josh then converted the try to take the score to 17-7. With 2 minutes remaining on the clock Lutterworth managed to sneak one more try to take the final score to 7-24. Whilst the lads lost this game the scoreline probably flattered their opposition and overall the 2 sides were quite equally matched.
Rugby Lions U15s 17 v Lutterworth U15s 5 The Lions got off to a great start when Hooker Machon caught the kick off and found a gap in the Lutterworth defence. He set up quick ruck ball for backs. Centre Riley exposed gaps in their back line and raced for the line only to be stopped inches short . Winger Findley was on hand to receive the pop pass to go under the posts. Clarke added the two points . The Lions dominated much of the ball possession with Fuller, Hobson and Mackenzie working hard around the pitch to secure ball. The rucking was more efficient which gave scrum half George a solid platform to release the backs. A great passage of forward play allowed Williams another try out wide, made by good running lines of the centres. With the game played at a furious pace the Lions brought on fresh legs. The Lions tackling and cover defence was outstanding as Lutterworth found it difficult to break Rugby down. The Lions won a line out on the half way line which Wagstaff won and fed George he in turn span the ball wide to Clarke and 3 passes later winger Williams outstripped their defence. Lutterworth never gave up trying and scored with 10 minutes left. The Lions weren’t about to let victory slip by and kept Lutterworth at bay for the remainder of the game. Probably the best rugby the Lions have played this season. All 19 players giving 100% effort and commitment shown by the players.
