Rugby Lions U10s v Daventry U10s

Game 1: Lions won 6 tries to 0

Lions took the kick off and went straight on the attack with a big run from Jordi Pocknell with Oran Aske-Haley taking the pass and being just forced out before the try line. Matty Tildesley and Tom Bailie was impressive with their strong runs off the wings to gain valuable yardage. Lions dominated the lineouts with Robert Jupp and Pocknell winning every throw. The forward line of Aske-Haley, Jamie Carwardine and Jupp were winning ball from every scrum with Kieran Lorimer back as scrum half getting the ball out to Dominic Deery.

Pocknell, ‘Superman’ Carwardine and Aske-Haley all went over for tries before the half time whistle.

Zak Wright, Trafford Warwick and Jack Cave all came on at half time. Rugby Lions continued to dominate the game with most of the play being in Daventry’s half. Findlay Williamson went on a mazy run and managed to off load in the tackle to a waiting Pocknell who barrelled over for his second of the game. In the next play Aske-Haley superbly snatched the ball and off loaded to Carwardine who threw himself over the line for Lions fifth try of the day. Daventry managed to get some ball in hand and made good yardage only to be held up as they tried to put the ball down for a try. From the resulting five yard scrum the forwards managed to win the scrum and turn over the ball, Lorimer passed it out to Deery who went into a ruck, the ball came out to Aske-Haley who off loaded to Jack Cave who went in for Lions sixth and final try.

Game 2: Lions Drew 1-1

In a game of lots of penalties against both teams this was a more closely fought affair. The new forward line of Warwick, Williamson and Jupp had a lot of work to do. At half time there was still no score from either side.

Lions started the second half with a well thought out switch move between Wright and Carwardine but they were stopped short of the try line. Daventry went over for their first try of the day only for Tildesley to equalize for the Lions on the last play of the game.

Rugby Lions U11s v Daventry U11s

Daventry "A" 0 - Lions 61

Despite having four players missing at the weekend the Lions produced some fantastic rugby to seal an impressive victory away to Daventry RFC.

The team as a whole played well with a solid defence and strong forward play allowing an impressive score to be accumulated with nine tries being scored from five different players. Rory Wagstaff was in fine form powering through the opposition to score four tries. Fellow forward Will Davis also scored an excellent try with Harry Turnock-Rogers bursting over the line to cap a fine performance at second row.

The remaining tries were scored by fly half Tom Doherty with two well taken touch downs and scrum half Liam Wardle showing good pace to score in the corner with a run from deep in his own half.

Probably the most satisfying aspect of the game for the coaches was the tackling and effort by all the team to ensure the home team didn’t score.

Daventry "B" 0 - Lions 14

With Lions making some positional changes and an improved performance from the home team the second match was much more even and the game moved quickly from end to end. The Lions had to do their fair share of tackling with Tom Smith in his first game in the second row ably supporting the experienced Oliver O’Conner as they battled for control of the ball in the first half and fed Rory Wagstaff who evaded defenders to score the first try.

The second half produced more open running rugby with James Stewart playing on both wings full of confident running. Rory Campbell on his return to the Lions team kicked well and combined smoothly with centre Ed Hands who did everything but score during the game. Although the backs performed well it was the forwards day and it had to be that man Rory Wagstaff that scored the last try of the day that ensured the victory.
